I had a p0420 code for the catalytic converter. I cleared the code. The
service engine light with the same code returned about 10 days ago and
again I cleared it. Just returned again.
I have a 2001 Nissan Frontier XE with 4 cylinder (KA24). Truck has
68,000 plus miles.
I found some info on this code on the internet. My question is about the
Nissan Service Bulletin about the p0420 code which applies to the 2001
4 cyc KA24 engine. It says a common fix is to have the ECM
Reprogramed. Have any other members had this done to their 2001
Nissan with the 4 cyc KA24 engine?
I stopped at a Nissan Dealer and the service rep. seamed like he didn't
know much about reprograming ECM. He said this was not a common
problem. So I'm not sure if he is correct about not being common.
Also truck is 2 to 3 months pass 8 year emmisons warranty.
Any suggestions about this or replacing if needed my own catalytic
converter is welcomed.
Thanks for any help.

NTB02-092 states to reprogram the ECU for this concern. Warranty time pays .7 hr to perform this recall. Sounds like you need to find a dealer that has a BRAIN and is concerned about customer service. You should also ask them about "GOODWILL", which will cover up to $300 for a repair(in this case it is much less). Be also aware that cats do fail, but the first course of action is to do the reprogram.

Frontierguy, thanks for the info. This coming week I will check with a few
Nissan Dealers in the Portland, OR area. I will ask them about the ECU
reprograming and about a goodwill fix. I hope I find someone in this area
that knows about the service bulletin you mention. Thanks again.

Frontierguy,
I got my ECU regrogamed today. That took care of the problem. I took it
to the second Nissan Dealer I talked to. The service department knew
about the rerogaming to correct the problem.
I also asked them about Goodwill Fix. Didn't get very far with that
question. I paid them $95.00 for everything. Should I try Nissan Corp. for
refund since it was only a few months pass 8 year emissions warranty. I'm
just happy to have this taken care of and fixed.
Thanks for all your help.

Glad you got it taken care of. Call Nissan about the "Goodwill', It won't cost anything but your time.
