A bit bummed here.
Hooked up a new car stereo in my 01 King Cab. Stereo works fine, but dash
lights went out. Checked all fuses (inside car and under hood)
with my eyes and with a multimeter, and they all seem to be fine. People tell me it's possible
the bulbs blew, but I wonder why a fuse would not have blown first. Not
sure if this is helpful/significant, but when I use the dash light
dimmer, the multimeter shows the power stays the same; shouldn't
it be dropping? Possible the dimmer blew and I need a new one? Rather not buy
the part to find out if it's the problem, but if it is the problem,
could save me some money rather than having to open the dash and mess w/the many little bulbs. That dimmer is the only thing left before I am
forced to dissect the dash...unless you have any other ideas.
Went to the dealer this morning...they say will be a couple hundred to look at it, then maybe another 10-12 hours of labor to fix. I'm lookin at over a grand, which means I'll more likely just be driving in the dark forever.
Help please!

I think I would re check the illumination circuit from the vehicle harness to the stereo unit, if the dash lites worked prior to the install, the problem is most likely improper wiring from vehicle to stereo. Make sure the stereo instructions specify which side of the illumination is to be wired in to, ground or power side??????

Dash lights definitely worked prior to the install, and I believe it could be improper wiring from vehicle to stereo--especially because instructions DO NOT specify which wire to attach illumination to, but now even with the radio unplugged, or the old one plugged back in, dash lights are out. Really sucks. Any more help or ideas are much appreciated. Thank you!

Did you check all the fuses and ground wire conections? It's possible that a tug on the wire loom pulled apart a connector or broke off a post.
Good Luck.. lakota

I used my eyes first, then a multimeter, to check all fuses; all are fine. The black wire from the radio harness is still grounded.
Help more please...
Thank you.

Try operating the dial on the dimmer up and down rapidly with the dash lite switch on,see if the dash lites come on, possible concern with the dimmer, have seen them fail before.
