I recently replaced the upstream ( manifold) O2 sensor on my 2001 Nissan Frontier 2WD with 4 banger engine. I was eye balling the down stream O2 sensor, thinking about replacing it when I noticed that it is located IN FRONT of the converter not after it. How is this arrangement supposed to work ? How can the computer dtermine anything about the efficiency of the converter with BOTH O2 sensor mounted upstream ? I am the original owner and the exhaust system is 100 % factory original.

The 3 way cat is attached to the manifold. That is why there is an O2 sensor before and after it.

I understand now. There is a front cat underneath the heat shroud right beneath the upstream O2 sensor. I never realized there were two of them. Amazing!
