I was driving my 2006 Frontier 6speed 4.0 with 47,000 miles, down the by-pass when the motor started to bog down and the 4x4 light came on. Then I immediately pulled over in a parking lot and turned the truck off. I tried to restart the truck and all I heard was clicking, as if the battery was dead. The motor was trying to turn over, but it just wasn't. So a friend and I push started the truck and we heard something snap. When the truck started we heard something thrashing between the motor and trans. I also noticed that I have to hold down the gas pedal to even get it to fire. I pulled the starter and everything was fine. I also pulled access cover to the bell housing, felt around in there and everything seemed good. ????

Please help

IT sounds broke!!!! Depending on your in service date you may still be covered under your power train warranty 5yrs/60K miles. Very difficult to diagnose w/o being able to hear it.

Mine is doing the same thing.  It starts, then the odometer and 4WD displays go out, the gages drop to zero and the battery light stays on.

Also the engine won't rev beyond just above idle.

I'd rather not get the thing towed to the dealer if I can help it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

whb196, sound like a possible IPDM E/R failure, I have also seen the ABS control unit produce the same concerns. These modern vehicles are a pain to diagnose. Two vehicles can have the same symptoms, with different failed parts.

Frontierguy,

It's looking kinda gruesome here.  I charged the battery all night on my 6 amp charger, then upon connecting the cables, the voltage began a steady drop from 13.8 and heading downwards quickly.

I cranked it up, gages went to zero again, but the battery voltage jumped up to 18.5!!!

I quickly shut down, and disconnected the negative cable again.

Is it time to call for a tow to the Nissan dealer?

BTW, a great friend of mine Willie Bradshaw is a KTM dealer.  Funcycles in Valdese NC.

Thanks in advance for your reply and help.

Issue resolved.

It cost quite a bit, but my Nissan dealer found all sorts of strange codes were being thrown by an alternator that went bonkers.  It was also responsible for a parasitic drain on my battery.

I've had it back and driven it daily for almost a week with no more problems.

Who would have thought an alternator could have caused so many other issues.

Thanks for your help.

Amazing isn't it? Try working on them everyday, different vehicles , same symptoms, different cure! Like you say, why would an alt cause so many other malfunctions????

Amazing isn't the word I'd use...

The battery drain is believable based on something making improper contact internally, or even a corroded connector.

But the crazy thing was pumping out 18.5V (verified by the dealer), and that would seem to point to the PCM voltage regulator.

It's possible the flaky alternator was adversely affecting the entire electrical system.  At any rate it's back up and going even though the entire bill was $570.  Worth it I suppose because it was not drivable as it was.

No thanks, you can keep your tech position!  I was lucky enought to retire from the NC community college system last year, and really, really reduced my stress.

Thanks for your help.  Remember Willie at Fun Cycles if you need a KTM part that you can't find locally.

Take care, ride safe.
