dead battery on my 2010 frontier still under warranty due to my own stupidity. left the doors open all night cause i went to bed after packing for a camping trip.

jump star.....attempted to jump start. crossed the cables on the good car. not even gonna make up a story. im an idiot.

anyway, so im hooked up correct on my side and reversed on the good vehicle side. cant remember if i even had a chance to stick my key in to give it a shot at starting when i saw some 'smoke' thru the dash???AC vents??, smelled some fumes ...unhooked cables right away.

truck was deader than dead whereas before i became an idiot moron it would click click click lccik and the rpm gauge would move like a good ol drained battery.

checked all the fuses in glove box...all intact.

went to store had old battery tested it was at 3.5 V. DID NOT ADMIT TO MY IGNORANCE. bought a new battery and hooked it up and it started right up and all the components ive checked so far are in order. ran some errands, started stopped all that, seems right as rain.

should i take it to a dealer and get it checked out at the alternator starter, computer, other fuses linkages i dont know about. or do new vehicles have idiot proofing and i am safe.

#1 it seems the battery saver should have shut down the
systems draining the battery???????
#2 you are very lucky that the ABS actuator didn't fry or
the ECU, most likey this occurs when the ignition is
already on and a jump start is attempted correctly or
crossed is even more catastrophic.
#3 if you slow charge(2 amps) your battery for 24 hrs it
will come back to life more than likely.
#4 we have all done it(just hate to admit it).

i got a new battery. 1 week old battery in the truck.

upon opening the door and popping the hood and shutting the door 1st thing this AM:

DC voltage tested at the terminals is 12.55

5 mins later 12.59

started truck, all systems off 12.9

cruised around the block with everything running AC radio lights blinkers
tested again with truck running 12.9.

im concerned that the Voltage is low with the truck running. perhaps the sign of a bad alternator or something?

im obsessed b/c the original battery with 14K miles on the truck crapped out last week. im taking it in for my next oil change/service appt and will certainly tell the dealer to check the electrical system, but am doing my own
'investigative work' in the meantime.

im a newb with the multimeter and have only the 'skills' to test the battery at this point.

thx for any info, thoughts, suggestions

No worries, my cable cross was trying to jump a van with my old eclipse, with 2 sets of cables daisy chained...long story, short ending ;)

In any case, I was under the impression that any reading between 12v and 14.4v was 'acceptable' for a car battery. Please correct me if I am wrong. Also, took a reading a few mins ago, my truck is at 13.05v. I'd wager you're golden at 12.9.
