I bought my truck with 80,000 miles on it, and now have about 170,000.  Am I flirting with disaster having not changed the timing belt?  I have no way to know if it was done before I bought the truck, so I have to assume it hasn't been done.

Thanks!

With 170K, I'm sure it has been done. otherwise it would be
rattling real bad or broke by now.

Reading the other "valve chatter" thread, I have to assume when I first start the truck up the chatter is the timing belt, which is normal?

It seems to have clicking noise all the time, very faint, but present.  Is this normal?  There isn't any rattling noises, or what I'd call rattling....just the faint clicking while it's running.

The "clicking" may be the normal injector noise. If you rev
the engine and listen to the dist. base with a stethoscope
or long screw driver up to your ear, it will sound like the
bearings are bad in the dist due to the timing belt
rattling, assuming the belt is loose.

So, if there is a "rattling" sound @ the base of the dis., then the timing belt needs to be replaced?

I have an 03 that i just bought, it has 99k and the timing belt had not been replaced so I went ahead and had it done. I have a family member with the same truck, they didnt replace it and it broke, the engine is now zero clearance. If I were you, I would go ahead and replace it, every 80-90k miles it should be done, not just once.

bplummer, more than likely, yes.
jwmurff, what do you mean by "zero clearance"? Have they
installed a new belt? Very unlikely that the valves are
bent.

An interference engine, means that the pistons will hit the
valves when the timing belt breaks and the crank continues
to turn. Very unlikely on that engine, with an auto trans
the crank stops as soon as the belt breaks, on a man trans,
if you are cruising down the road and the belt breaks the
crank will continue to turn until the clutch is depressed.
Sounds like your "mechanic" is trying to get a vehicle
cheap from you.

...I listened to the bottom of the dis. cap with a scope, and it sounded like gears turning.  Imagine, if you can, a set of gears rolling together.  That's what it sounded like.  ???  Hope that's a description you can "imagine.".....  it was a smooth, consistant sound.
