Hey guys, got a problem here and any help would be great. I got an 01 frontier, 2wd, 2.4l. It started while driving about a week ago. I was going about 70mph and went to pass someone. I hit my blinker and hit the gas and the truck bogged down like i i turned the key off. As soon as i turned the blinker off it picked back up. Same thing happens when you turn the ac, headlights or radio on. So naturally i assumed it was the alternator. I had it tested and it tested bad so i replaced it and the battery since it was 5 yrs old and could be a weak link in the future. It ran good for about half a day and started again. I had the alternator tested again and it tested bad aswell. I got it replaced and tested before it was installed and it tested good. Again it ran good for about 10 miles and the whole process started again. If i leave it idling for about a half hour and kill it it will start right back up but if i leave it sitting for and hour or so, it just clicks. So after 2 alternators, new battery, all terminals and connections cleaned and checked, does anyone know what could be the problem. Im mind boggled and cant seem to figure this out. All help is appreciated.

With the ignition "ON" and engine "NOT" running, is the
"BATTERY" indicator illuminated??? If not the bulb is blown
and needs to be replaced or there is a wiring concern which
can be determined by grounding the field wire and checking
if the battery lite illuminates. It sounds more like you
have a wiring concern that is shorted to ground due to
chafing or corrosion. Be sure to check the harness from
battery to alt real good, especially near the battery tray.

The battery light does illuminate with the key on engine off. I have inspected the cables and found no cuts or corrosion but i will definately look again to double check. If nothing is found, are there any other areas i should look at?

Just checked the cables from battery to alt. and found no signs of wear, breakage, corrosion, or cuts. all wires are still secure in their looms aswell.

Does it have an after market stereo? I've seen them create
a draw on the system, but usually takes over nite to dis
charge the battery.

It does have an aftermarket stereo but it has been in the truck since I bought it 6 months ago with no issuse until now. But, I did suspect that also and pulled it out. No change.

Hey Frontier Guy! need some input if you dont mind. I have a 2000 Frontier(Manual Trans) with a 2.4 L with 106,000 miles on it. The truck has been excellent so far but lately its been giving me some problems. On ocassion the alarm has been going off and my battery has been draining completely overnight. I recently put in a new battery and dont think it could be my alternator. I made sure that no lights were on and also checked for any possible shorts in the electrical.  Would you be able to give me an idea on where to start troubleshooting this? I hate waking up @ 2:00 AM to turn off my alarm! Thanks!

Hey MKadeC, What can we do with the aftermarket stereos if it does infact have an excessive amp draw? I would like to keep the aftermarket stereo in there. Let me know, Thanks!

eitydeuce, it helps if you start your own thread rather
than high jacking an already existing one. Anyway, is the
alarm system after market? Also, you mention an after
market stereo system. Trouble on both accounts, usually
wired in correctly.
