2005 Frontier Variable Timing Valve has failed for 3rd time in 3 months. This started just after Nissan recalled and ungraded ECM. Dealer says catalytic coverter bad causing valve to fail. Engine idles rough. Dealer says it needs new engine. My independent mechanic says they are wrong. Catalytic converter can not clog variable valve. Doe this make sense? Who is correct?

How can a cat cause a VVT to fail?????? What DTC are you
getting and how many miles on the vehicle? The recall is on
the ECU relay, correct?

ECU-ECM-same thing. The multi cyl misfire can cause the
cats to go bad, so that cause needs to be determined first.
The cats are warranted for 8yrs/80 K miles. If the cats
start to break up, the material can be drawn into the
engine causing rapid cyl/piston ring wear, which results in
high oil consumption. Haven't seen many concerns w/ the Int
valve timing control. It most likely needs a VCV and filter
kit if you drive on dusty roads(have seen cases where the
canister is actually full of dirt due to driving on dusty
roads).
