I am having to replace my engine and 2 front catalytic converters on my 2005 frontier crew cab nismo. It has 118,000 miles on it and the front two converters have already been replaced once (by a previous owner). The truck has also been burning enough oil that I have had to put 2 quarts in it every week. When taking things apart to get the engine out and the truck ready for the new engine, I noticed a lot of black (what seemed to be oil) in the Mass Airflow. There was also a lot of grit (maybe carbon buildup) around the 1st and 5th spark plugs (both on passenger side) and there was a lot of oil around the 3rd spark plug (middle one on the passenger side). Right before I took my truck to Nissan the Check Engine Light was flashing randomly (before this, it was just on due to one bad catalytic converter). The PCV Valve has already been replaced. What could be the cause of my problem/problems?

The cats coming apart will draw catalyst into the engine
due to overlap, thus causing the cylinders to score and the
rings to wear. Misfire is the leading cause of cat failure,
due to plugs, injectors, dirty MAFS(have to use a genuine
Nissan oil impregnated air filter).

Yea, that's one of the things I gathered frome researching online.  I also found that the design of the front cats being so close to the engine was the problem.  Do you happen to know of anyway to prevent this problem?  I'm really worried that once I put my new engine in and my new cats on that I'm just going to have the same problem in the near future because the source (whatever it may be) of the problem has not been fixed.  I don't think my truck currently has a nissan air filter in it, is it possible that something that simple could be the source of all my problems?  Do you have any recommendations on how to go about finding and correcting the source to prevent this consistent problem?

Again, a Nissan air filter is very important, good
ignition, good plugs, no intake leaks, etc. Is the check
engine lite on?

Yes.  I took it to Nissan because my check engine light was on and because of my excessive oil consumption issue.  They gave it back to me and told me they marked some things and wanted me to drive it 500 miles and bring it back.  I didn't even drive it 30 minutes and the check engine light started flashing (which it had never done before) and the truck started idling rough. I immediately called them and they had me bring it back to them.  After that, they told me I needed a new engine and 2 front cats.  They didn't mention anything else needed replacing.

So basically the genuine air filter, which I have, the is best way to prevent this problem? Since I have the crew cab LWB, I can move my cats back a bit down the exhaust line, would that be a good idea?

I want to be proactive and protect my investment, in any reasonable way I can. Replace plugs with iridium type at 105K. Anything else? I am at almost 38K with my 08, and am starting to hear the whine from the timing chain tensioner. I also have the AT external cooler (aftermarket) planned once I hit 75K, and will bypass the RAD AT cooler at that point.

djb,
the Nissan air filter is one way to insure the integrity of
the MAFS, there are many reasons for a misfire, but this
will eliminate the MAFS as a culprit. I have no idea how
one would go about moving the cats.
