My dash light dimmer has three wires, a hot, a ground and a variable output(hot). I put two after market gauges in my console and for these gauge lights, I tapped into the variable wire at the dimmer. When these lights are on, the dash lights are off and vice-versa. In other words the lights in the new gauges dim in the opposite direction to the dash lights. I then checked the dimmer output with a tester (simple bulb and ground). The same occured with the tester. When the dash lights are dim, the tester is bright and vice-versa.

What am I missing here? How do I get the new gauge lights to go dim and bright with my dash lights?

What we are missing is, what vehicle are you working
on?????? Let us assume you are working on an 04 or earlier.
You need to splice into the blue/red wire from one lead of
your lighting and splice into the pink/black wire from the
ground wire of your lighting. You have to be wired "thru"
the dimmer, not a separate ground.

Frontier Guy, sorry about that. Yes, it is a 2004 Frontier. Thanks for your help. I had incorrectly assumed "a ground is a ground".  I should be able to run a separate gound w/o too much trouble. Appreciate the help.
