Hello, I have a 2003 Frontier 4 cyl auto. I have a bad leak in the
top of my gas tank and am considering replacing the gas tank
myself. Is this a dificult job to drop the tank and swap over the
fuel pump and sending unit?
Are there any special tools like fuel line disconnects that are
required?
Any tricks for dropping the tank?
Any information you can provide is appreciated. Thanks - Jim

Might want to check with your dealer, there is a recall on
the fuel sending unit which includes the tank if needed.
Seeing you are in NY, you will need both. If you are not
familiar with this type of repair, I would advise seeking
professional help. Where in NY are you?

Definitely agree with Frontierguy on this one. If you've
never even seen a tank removed I wouldn't go wandering into
it. And besides, it's actually easier to remove the bed
from the truck first. Plus if you can get a dealership to
fix it for you under a recall, less money you have to fork
out.

Hey thanks guys.. Does anyone have a link to the recall?
I've got 96K on this truck and would rather have the dealer
fix it for sure. I'm a decent mechanic, just never dropped
the tank on this vehicle. How do you go about removing the
bed - that would give me good access to the top of the
tank. Anybody have a link to a service manual? BTW, I'm by
Kingston, NY. Thanks - Jim

Fuel
Tank Recall
There's the info, however I noticed it's for the V6
Frontiers.
-As for the pulling the bed, you'll need to disconnect
the rear lighting (should be a plug on the back left
frame rail).
-Then unscrew your filler neck assembly from the bed
side. usually anywhere from 2-4 screws accessible from
the outside by the fuel cap.
I'm not 100% sure on this next part as I don't have a
truck in my driveway to look at
-You'll either have 6 bolts underneath the truck, or 6
bolts in the bed of the truck. The bolts in the bed will
be a Torx (star pattern) head bolt if you have those.
The ones underneath will be your standard Hex bolts.
-Either way you'll need to soak the bolts with some good
penetrating lube (like PB blaster or Kroil) and pull out
a impact or breaker bar and extensions.
-Do one last check to make sure there isn't any hoses or
wiring still clipped to the bed.
-Get 3 friends to help lift the bed and slide it back.
(watch for wiring getting pulled and the filler neck
doesn't get caught. You shouldn't have to completely
remove it to access the top of the tank. This will let
you see if a clamp is just loose, a hose broken, or
something far worse like the fuel pump assembly cracked,
or tank cracked.
Good luck
