Why would a serpentine belt just come off? Those suckers
are on there pretty tight. Mine is not dry or cracked,
though there is 70k on the truck and is probably the
original one. One morning, I noticed my power steering was
not working and battery light was on. I looked under hood
and belt was just laying on top of the pulleys, as though
someone took it off. I put it back on, with reasonable
ease, but why would it just slide off?

My guess is the tensioner is worn out and not keeping the
belt tight. Did you need a ratchet or were you able to
just use your hands to move it and put the belt back on?

Just used my hands. It wasnt easy, but easier than I
thought it should have have been. I should probably fix
that. Next time, the belt may get caught in the fan and
cause more problems.
How easy is this to fix? Is it just a bolt on application
or am I gonna have to take it in?
Thx.

The tensioner just bolts on. I have seen critters get in a
belt at start-up and flip them off. Usually makes a mess of
the critter!!!!
