Hi Guys, I have on 02 that has an issue or 2. It's a little rough at idle, but I am not sure if that is related to the main problem. When the truck is cold, it accelereates good, but after it warms up, it is sluggish and surges. Oh yea, forgot to mention, it's a 3.3 SC motor. I was thinking mabye a injector shorting out or a cat clogging up. What do you think. It hasn't thrown any codes since I have hade it(1 week). I'm gonna ohm out the injectors today, anyone know what the norm for them is? Oh, BTW, I am running 87 octane, am I supposeed to use premium in this thing?
Thanks in advance for any input.

Hello there, I do know that the SC recommends premium fuel, but unsure if this would cause the symptoms you describe. Have you checked the timing?
I had similar issues after doing my timing belt, found out when I changed it, I was off a tooth, and it surged a during the shifting.. I had a 5 speed manual.
I used to have a 94 pathfinder.

I'll check that. Does the SC have 2 seperate timing belts, or chains? Is there a way to check it without a complete tear down? Also, I think I will add some octane boost to see if that helps.
Thanks David

Looking at the belt routing, could a slipping belt cause this problem?

If I recall correctly the VG motor has 1 timing belt, it is to be replaced every 105K miles. I believe you can take of the housing on the front of the heads to see the timing belt. I think it is plastic and comes off pretty easily. Are your drive belts loose? Sounds like they are if it is slipping. When I mentioned to check the timing, I meant to actally check the timing, and not the timing belt. I do recall on some of VG motors the timing belt does stretch over time and can make an engine knocking sound.

Do you have a replaceable fuel filter on that model? If it is getting clogged, it could be the source of your problem. Also, a failing fuel pump can give those symptoms.

What kind of air filter are you running? K&N will allow a
lot of dirt to get in, and the oil from it coats just about
everything including the MAF. During warm up the MAF is
bypassed by the ECU, but is used once it reaches operating
temp to help with fuel trim.

It did have a K&N on it but the Previous owner changed it to a standard. I pulled the MAF and as you stated, it was coared with black soot(or oil). Cleaned it with MAF claener. Looks good now.

OK, well this has been an easy one to diagnose. The air filter was half black(clogged). That helped a bit. The plugs were incorrectly gapped at between .035 and .039. I set htem at .044. The timing was set at about 2 or 3 btdc. I set it back to 10. The prossess for doing this seems a little unusual to me being a Chevy guy all my life. What is the point of running it at 2k for 2 minutes and reveing it a 3 times? Wouldn't the TPS being disconnected kill the computer advance by itself? Anyway, it is running way better, plenty of pep, smoth idle, although I would expect a lot more from any motor with a blower on it. Again, thanks guys for all of the input. BTW does anyone know where to get a book that includes the blower? THe one at Oriely does not include that motor.

PS That engine does require premium fuel. Be sure to use a
Genuine Nissan oil impregnated air filter.
