Hi,
I have a 2008 Frontier SE with the 4.0 V6 4x4 with Auto Tranny. It has just 27k on it now as I hardly drive it except to and from the store at the most.
I was driving it back from the store this morning and the Service Engine soon light came on. I checked the gas filler cap to see if it was tight and it was. The Frontier has a full Nissan service history and just got it's 26,500 mile service about a month ago.
Any ideas as to what may cause this light to come on and would I be covered under the Nissan 5 year/60k warranty?
Thanks.

Could be a lot of things. It is under warranty. Take it in and let them deal with it. My guess....probably something in the evaporative control system.

Thanks Boomer, well they just rang me and it's booked in for next week. They said there is a charge for the diagnostic which is $55, then they said they will give me a quote for repairs??????
Seemingly according to their service guy at the counter, it may not be under warranty. I immediatley countered by saying that it should be considering the very low mileage and year of the vehicle and I told them of a few possible problems also that could cause this.
Something tell me they may try and charge me for this, if they try, then I who do I complain to- Nissan USA? Would I be better to contact them 1st before I go in to the dealer next week?
Thanks.

Call your local parts stores and see if you can use there code reader(for free) and see what code it is thowing and let us know. You can most likely avoid thier diagnostic fee then. Hope this helps.

The basic warranty is 3yrs/36K whichever comes first, so
you are out in time. The powertrain warranty is 5yrs/60K,
which covers the power train not check engine light
concerns. Some items are covered for 8yrs/80K.( ECU-cats)
Did you ever get the fuel sender recall done? PC042 is the
recall . P0463 would be the DTC associated w/ the fuel
level sensor. Most likely it is that or the vent control
valve sticking.

Thanks for the info. No I was never notified about the fuel level sensor recall. They told me they would only fix anything under warranty if it became defective.
Even though I have only 27k on the clock I still am out of Warranty? Should they have called me in for the recalls instead of waiting for it to go defective?
Would I be better to get it scanned at an Auto Parts store and see what the code is before I go to the deaslership next week so I know where I stand?

Update:
I went in to O'Reilly's and they scanned it for free for me. It showed only 1 code p0447 which when defined : Evaporative Emission System Vent Control Open Circuit.
We tried to clear the code but it would not clear. So I presume the control valve on top of the Evap canister is faulty?
Is this a TSB and under warranty or if not, can I do it here myself, I heard you can take this out very easily and clean the plunger with WD40 and normally it's just gunked up. Can anybody confirm this?
Thanks for all your help with this.

Got off the phone today with Nissan USA. They told me the warranty is out on the Frontier since August 21st 2012 and the Evap valve is not being covered.
Nissan have refused to admit there is a problem with the Evap Valve. However they did say to get it scanned "again" at a recognised Nissan Dealership. Then get a cost of the repairs and resubmit it to Nissan USA and they will see what they can do, no promises.
I have priced (just to be on the safe side) an Evap Control Valve and I can get 1 from a company called Dormer, they can do a valve for $44.63 and I can fit it myself and then re-clear the codes. I have a feeling I will be going down this route

Again, I am not a fan of aftermarket parts, it's your
choice. The valve is fairly easy to replace, just release
the spring arm(for lack of a better term) to spin it to
line up the tabs, be sure to spray the O ring with silicone
or WD40 when installing. It is very easy to distort the O-
ring upon installation. Nissan has a "GOODWILL" policy for
vehicles that are just out of warranty as yours is only out
by a couple of weeks, way under in miles. This is another
good reason to support your local dealer with regular work,
although I know a lot of guys and gals like to do there own
work.

Well I totally understand where you are coming from and I agree. I am booked in to the dealership for Friday morning. Since I already have a code to give to them I presume they will still run their own diagnostics?
I am hoping they will do a "good will" due to my very low mileage on the truck and the fact that I am only out of warranty of 2 weeks. It would be good PR for them if they want to retain their customers.
