Hi Guy's my name is Dickie,

I've owned my 2001 Frontier crew cab SE (auto) since new,

has 70,000 miles on it and has always been reliable,

like a lot of people here I had my service engine soon light come on,

plus once transmission is warmed up low rpm gear changes jolt mainly 1st and second,

high rpm changes don't so obviously I floor it all the time.

but its inspection time and I have to fix this problem,

so I changed the oil and filter, transmission fluid and the filter and air filter,

Light still didn't go out,

I even treated the old girl to 4 new tires to show i cared but daddy can't get any love!

so I went round checked for air leaks and cleaned all the electrical connectors with QD Cleaner,

still no joy.

other issues are blower fan only works in 4th position,

looked at the wiring diagram and it points to the fan resistor being bad,

so I came here and started reading the wealth of info and registered.

I took it to the local Auto Zone to get the codes here is what I got,

NISSAN P1705 - Not in P or N During KOEO / KOER.

NISSAN P0733 - 3rd. Gear Malfunction.

NISSAN P0120 - Throttle Position Sensor Signal Range/Performance.

NISSAN P0731- 1st. Gear Malfunction.

NISSAN P0325 - Knock Sensor Circuit Malfunction.

NISSAN P1441 - Evaporative Emission Control System Very Small Leak.

now I know my wife never tightens the fuel cap properly but the other codes I need help with please,

so back to Auto Zone and priced up the following parts,

Knock Sensor,

Throttle Position Sensor,

Transmission Speed Sensor,

O/2 Sensors for Manifolds,

Fan Resistor,

Fuel Filter,

so am I on the right track with the parts I'm about to replace to get this through the inspection?

am I over doing it replacing something that doesn't need replacing?

also prices between eBay and auto zone are close apart from the Knock Sensor,

they seem to be much cheaper like under $50 on eBay where as auto zone wants $120!

why the big difference am i missing something here?

1st, nice looking truck.
2nd, forget AZ, use Genuine Nissan parts, you and your
truck will be much happier!
3rd, has it ever had the fuel sender recall? this will
include replacing the tank if needed(rusty nipple causing
small leak code).
4th, you need a TPS, unfortunately it is not just a
matter of bolting it on, there is about a 13 page
procedure for setting it up correctly. This may correct
your shifting concern also.
5th, you need a knock sensor, which means you also need
an intake plenum gasket, int. man. gaskets and 6 lower
injector seals(I have flipped them over and re-used them
in a pinch).
6th, even though you changed the trans fluid, it would be
a good idea to flush it and add a conditioner.
7th,you need a blower resister.
8th,for the very small leak code, be sure there is no
rust at the fuel filler neck at the sealing area for the
cap, possible dirt in vent control valve, possible vac.
cut valve bypass valve along with many other
possibilities!!!
9th,P0731 and P0733 refer to mechanical malfunction in
the trans such as: control valve sticking, solenoid
sticking, servo, etc., again I suggest a trans flush and
conditioner. Also the TPS if correctly installed may
correct this concern.
10th, did I mention the importance of Genuine Nissan
electrical parts, it's just that I see so many failures
of aftermarket parts. Also I am a fanatic for Nissan oil
impregnated air filters, this is a must!!!!
PS good luck

Unfortunately price is always a issue as im just a school bus driver with a limited budget, plus having 6 motorcycles doesn't help either.

We used to live on martha's vineyard and the off island dealer never informed us of the recalls, i just checked there are 3 i found,

2001 NISSAN FRONTIER RECALL - #02V300000

RECALL FOR FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE : STORAGE : TANK ASSEMBLY : FILLER PIPE AND CAP

2001 NISSAN FRONTIER RECALL - #02V299000

RECALL FOR SUSPENSION : REAR

2001 NISSAN FRONTIER RECALL - #04V230000

RECALL FOR FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE : DELIVERY : FUEL PUMP.

are the dealers still honoring these recalls?

What did you use for a conditioner?

Replaced the resister and it works fine now!

Recalls never run out-call your dealer.
As far as I know, the TPS and knock sensor procedures are
not documented.
For trans flush we use the BG machine which first includes
a cleaner solution added to the trans and run for 5
minutes, then perform the flush with the BG machine,
followed by the addition of BG conditioner. You may want to
contact your dealer or a local trans shop.
Not sure why the speed sensor would be needed, Fuel filter
is good to change periodically.
