I have a question about this situation. Sunday, while traveling down the road at about 50 mph, my timing belt broke. I had no idea the engine had even shut off. The truck made no noise and after inspecting under the hood, there was no smoke or any visible leaks of any kind. I had it towed back to my house and took another look under the hood. After chasing my tail and 256 bucks later, it wasn't the distributor. I had the shop come pick it up at my house today.

I understand the engine is more than likely fried. I was not giving it gas when it happened nor was I even driving fast. No noise was ever made and I had no idea the engine had even shut off. What is the likelihood that I have bent valves, mayhem, etc..? The mechanic is putting a new timing belt on it and said he would be finished in the morning. How bad is this gonna be for me? The shop is charging me for the timing belt replacement, water pump and other goodies around 500. Please give em some good news...I have had a crap day and I can't handle any more bad news at this point.

..

Many people claim it is and interference engine but I have
not heard of any internal damage due to the belt breaking.
I hope this is the case because my belt is over 14 years
old.

Good luck.. Don S..

You should be fine. Have replaced many broken belts w/ no
valve damage. Did I mention preventative maintenance

Yes, you have mentioned it a time or two from what I have read. I got my SE back today and everything is great! I sheared 28 teeth off the timing belt and was very lucky. I have done all of the preventive maintenance up to this point except the timing belt and could never find the time to do it (or so I say). I promise from here on out, I will do ALL of the preventive maintenance from here on out. Thanks for replying and I will become more active on the board. One other thing, The grill bar is broken. Does anyone know of a replacement part for this? website? thanks in advance.

I have the EXACT same truck and had the exact same think
happen to me last year on the 4th of July. No damage was
done and it took a bit of work but all you have to do is
replace the belt and reset the cam positions and make sure
its top dead center and you should be good to roll after
putting it back together.
