Hello, I am new here and working on my brothers truck for him-1998 Nissan Frontier 4cyl 2wd. He was having a problem with the charging system. He installed a new alternator with no results then a new battery with no results (seems like it is running off the battery only). On the alternator there is the positive wire and the plug and coming out of the harness in the same location is a large black (12ga) wire that is not connected to anything. Is this a chassis ground? We need to get this truck back on the road by tomorrow night so any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanking You in Advance, Chuck

..

Make sure the battery and engine are properly grounded to the body and frame.
Some systems have a resistance wire that can burn up. so check the conductivity.

Good Luck.. Don S..

The battery is grounded to the frame via the a new cable (stock style).

Is there suppose to be a ground wire on the back of the alternator? I was told that the 12guage wire should bolt to the back of the alternator?

Where would a resistance wire be located?

Thanking You in advance, Chuck

I did a search.. and came up with...

http://www.nissanfrontier.org/forum_posts.asp?TID=4269&KW=re sistance+wire+&PN=0&TPN=2

The charge circuit starts at fuse 11 (10A) which is hot in on or start. This goes to pin 29 of the cluster on a white/black wire. This is actually the ignition wire as well so if the cluster lights up and works power should be OK here. The ignition power goes through the parallel combination of the charge bulb and the 100 ohm resistor and out pin 27 of the cluster on a yellow/black wire and it shows this going to pin 3 of the alternator (yellow/black wire). During on or start conditions there should be an active voltage on the yellow/black wire. (I'm not sure how high the voltage should be).

check the cluster:

With the cluster removed check the back of it (pin 27 is on the left connector bottom right side. right below it is the abs bulb(ABS is imprinted on the circuit board). Just to the left of the ABS is the 100 ohm resistor. Check this resistor that it is 100 ohms. Just to the right of the ABS is the "charge" bulb.

Sometimes the foil where the connectors get plugged into gets messed up so check this as well.

Alternator will not charge battery with cluster out . Since I repair the clusters some folks try and drive their vehicle with the cluster out and the battery dies.

In my day we didn't have Alternators in cars. I worked on generators a few times.

Yes... I'm that old!.. Don S..
