I'm thinking about adding the Gibson Swept-Side exhaust to my 06 Frontier LE 4x4.

http://www.gibsonperformance.com/products.asp?pid=14297& make=30&model=883#883

According to my local retailer (4WheelParts), there's a $140 difference in price.
Aluminized ~ $385
Stainless ~ $525

Other than the obvious cosmetic benefits, is there a good reason to spend the extra money?

I've heard that the Aluminized mufflers will show wear/rust, whereas the Stainless mufflers can, theoretically, last the life of the truck.

Any truth to any of this?

Should I save my $140 and spend it elsewhere?

Thanks.

I got this exhaust, it seems to be very good quality and a good fit, better than the magnaflow.  I just wish it was a little louder.

to answer your original question, what i read or heard about the diff b/w the stainless and aluminized is that personal preference and also climate would be the determining factors, i think that if you live in warmer climates you'd probably do just fine with the aluminized but if you live in a place where it rains a lot or lots of road salt, the stainless would wear better

opinions on it vary just like a lot of other parts, i can tell you that SLR (spencer low racing) uses this exhaust on their power package that they have for frontys, most people i talk to say they like the sound cause it's a nice low rumble, but not overpowering.as i said it varies on what you like personally...as far as that goes...most people seem to suggest that if you are doing it to see some performance gains you should also free up the intake by a CAI or freer flowing replacement filter, to allow it to breathe better overall

the dyno reports are available on the gibson site i believe as well if you haven't seen them

oh yeah..shop around, i.e. the internet...i believe you can get both the stainless steel one and aluminized for a lot cheaper than that price you listed unless that included labor

also...anyone who was interested in the custom tube products dual in/dual out same side exit setup for the fronty is out of luck.i emailed them to find out the specifics on the muffler...and they discontinued it last year, however it is a nice design and you could probably as others have speculated buy a muffler and have someone put you together one for cheaper than the 600 bucks they were asking anyway lol even with teh stainless steel

Could you not buy the cheaper one and get rust protection for it?  You can buy arosal cans of rust protection for like 10 bucks.. would that work or no?

what kind of rust protection spray do you mean? is it the rubberized stuff such as underbody coating? my father has a can of that in the garage and was wondering how close it is to herculiner...which i'm thinking of doing my bed in and some underside stuff to deaden road noise. my only concern is how much weight it will add to the truck as i don't wanna weigh down my beefy crew cab anymore than it is and her milage. but i suppose you could do it, to answer your question..interesting question...not sure if you are talking about that kind of rust protection, just wonder how it would change sound..probably deaden it some..and make it more mellow, which would be cool..but how would it affect the weight on the hangers? anyone have any thoughts?

don't use hurculiner. My friend put in in his El Camino and it looks awful. luckily he's not done working on the car (probably never will be) and when he does the body work, he's going to remove that hurculiner crap. If you're gonna spray your bed, get the pros to do it. As for rust and under side protection, I don't know.

I have to agree with Herculiner.  I believe that is what my F-250 has, because the stuff is already peeling in small portions.
