01 extended cab Supercharged 5spd 4x4.  2nd owner since 50k.  currently has 160k.  Owner says the timing belt and clutch were not done under his ownership.   The seller seems to have been very up front with me on what the truck needs - AC doesn't work and the e-brake is frozen.  The drivers power window switch is flaky.  New tires and battery.  Bed extender included.

It's about an hour away and my time is tight right now so I'm thinking I'll go look at it and if I like it, make an offer right there and possibly bring it back with me the same night.     What things should I be looking for?    I do most of my own mechanical work and know cars well.  But I am not familiar with Nissan.    I want an extended or crew cab manual transmission 4x4 pickup, with decent options (not a work truck), and this popped up.  Not much else out there to pick from other than domestic stuff (not doing that again) and Toyotas which are TWICE the price for a comparable truck.

given those issues (AC and e-brake) what's it worth?   He says he gets 18mpg out of it so I'm thinking the supercharger is okay (I've skimmed some posts on this site and it seems like the main problem with these is a rattle and poor mpg)

Any help is appreciated.  Thanks!

..

Welcome to the group!

The Taco's are really nice if the frames didn't rot off.  IMHO The automatics give less trobble and the the SC costs a little more to operate. The added Power of the SC would be nice on the steep grades at 11'000 feet in the Colorado Mountains or towing. Depending on the price the concern is the cost of replacing the timing belt.

My "99 3.3 automatic gets 22 highway @ 65mph with 10% ethanol regular and 17 city. But it only has 48,000 miles. Prices will vary for looks and location. Will it give good service?... that's a crap shoot with any brand new or used.

Hope you get a good one!.. Don S..

I'm in PA. Plenty of hills here, but nothing like the Rockies. I plan to
tow a 1500 lb boat/trailer. A manual transmission is fun to drive. Man
and machine connected.   To me driving an automatic is just sitting in
a chair pushing buttons and turning a wheel.   My opinion of course.
Nothing against automatics.   I just can't get excited about shelling out
money for something I don't want.   I drove a new Tacoma and a new
Frontier back to back.   Nissan has the feel of a lot more power and
better spaced gears. Toyotas first gear is very low.    You have to shift
to second halfway through the intersection, but there isn't enough
power to pull out in 2nd....     Nissan (new 4.0 at least) I did 1-2-4-6
on both test drives.

Just drove an 08 with 70k on it.   I think they want too much at $17k
but it's a nice truck.

my main problem with the s/c editions is that the stock
eaton s/c they used is garbage. Honestly i always felt
better off getting a stock one and just throwing some
goodies on there.

I'd consider a non SC but good trucks are scarce around here.  (South Central PA)   The Frontiers on Craigslist are either RWD or  Baywatch Yellow.   Or they have an Automatic transmission or they are twice what Edmunds says they're worth.    I wish I had the time right now to search the countryside looking for a nice truck.
