Yes an engine break in is required, and I would feather that baby for a little over the 500 miles.
with 23 miles on it, someone else has probably already test drove it. And that test drive might not have been a very easy going drive. Some people don't heed the break in period, and go all out.
I would do it based upon how you plan on spend most of your time driving. No matter what, take it easy on acceleration for the first 250 miles. Try to take a small trip, say 50 miles on a highway. That'll give you a 100 of the first 250. If you plan on driving in the city more, then take it around. But try to avoid situations where you need hard acceleration.
Once your 500 miles are done, disconnect the battery overnight and let the ECU clear it's settings. The thing is, the ECU programs itself to your style of driving. If it senses this slow acceleration, and gas saving driving, it tunes itself to that. So when you go for a "natural" style of driving, power isn't there (presuming you will hot rod the truck) So when you reset the ECU, it will learn your style, and will tune accordingly.
