Hi Frontier fans,

I've just purchased a Frontier XE (King Cab), 2000 vintage. I'm new to the 4X4 arena (upgraded from a Mazda B2200 p/up). When I move into & out of 4L (following the instructions) the change is rather rough (hear 'grinding' gears). Is this 'normal' or should I have it checked out?

Thanks.
Paul

..

Columbia-MO;

Welcome to the Frontier group.

... I like your user name. It sometimes helps to know where members are at.

... Are you stopped and pushing down on the lever before moving it? Mine does grind but very little. It would seem that it would be worse if the oil in the T-case was cold or old and thick. I have only shifted mine when things were well warmed up.

... Remember if you have automatic hubs to hit reverse and back-up a ways when returning to rear wheel drive.

My Best to all of Y’all‘uns….

Have a good one,    and CUL.. Don S..

Hi Don,

Thanks for the welcome & comment. Regarding your questions: Yes, I'm stopped & in Neutral (in the automatic transmission). The transmission was probably not fully warmed up. Regarding possible age of oil in T-case, there's 72,000 mls on the clock. I do have automatic hubs but the grinding occurs when moving out of 4H which is before one needs to reverse direction a bit to release the auto-hubs.

The lack of synchromesh just seems odd. It could be 'normal' but I'm ignorant of this 4X4 area to be able to make that assumption.

Regards,
Paul

Columbia-MO;

... Today I stopped and put the tranny in neutral and pulled the lever slowly back and pushed it down then back going into 4 low. there was no gear grinding.

... I drove around a little then put it in neutral. When I push the lever forward there was a minor amount of gear grinding noise. If you have a lot of grinding turn the engine off while in neutral then shift the lever... it worked for me...
