Hello all together,
I am new in this forum and want to introduce myself briefly. I am from Austria and drive a Nissan Navara (equal to the US Frontier) with a crew cab and standard bed. As the V6 gas engine is not available here on the European market, my Frontier is powered with the 2,5 Litres Diesel engine with 174 HP. Additionally I pimped my Frontier with an Old man Emu suspension kit, auxiliary Long Ranger fuel tank, skid plates and WARN headlight beams (strictly forbidden here :-) )
Perhaps I can participate in your long experience of Pickup trucks, because this type of car is not very popular here in the "Old world".
Sorry for my poor English, but I'll try my best.
Best regards, Christian

Welcome to the forum
What I would give to bring a Navara back to the states. Heck all I want is the diesel and transmission out of it. The diesels are not offered at all here.
And being from Austria I have a feeling your english is a little more proper than ours here. In fact I hate to say it but I speak american, not english, with a tad bit of Deutsch to boot. Not very much, not even most of the basics I'm sad to say. I never did pay much attention in class.

Hi,
I am rather sure that the Diesel engine wouldn't pass the strict American emission laws. On the other hand the V6 4 litres motor can't be ordered here, although the consumption would be nearly the same :-) When I got my Frontier I was forced to take a so called "Diesel Particle Filter" with it in combination with the automatic transmission. This filter eats up another 1-2 liters and so can drive 100 kilometers with about 12-14 litres Diesel. I guess the V6 would swallow more.
If you intend to take a Diesel in combination with manual transmission take care - the clutch isn't designed for the high output torque of the Diesel (~400 Nm) and especially here in the mountains many many people burned there clutches on the hills.

It wasn't till 04 that diesel trucks here started being brought into our emission laws. I had a 2000 Ford F-250 with a 7.3L diesel that had no emission equipment on it.
The great thing about the states is that there's a tons of companies here offering tons of aftermarket goodies. One being upgraded clutches. A stage 2 Zoom clutch would have no problem handling all that torque.
I feel as though our strict emission laws are what are giving us our horrible mileages, that and the love for big cars. It's sad when my old 90 Nissan Maxima V6 is getting 28 MPG and my wife's I4 Chevy Cobalt barely get's 26 MPG. And I've got twice as much room than she does. American's want good gas mileage, but they don't want a slow car.

In former times the car industry preached always for the Diesel in Europe. Instead of telling stories among men at the regulars' table about topspeed, acceleration and horsepower, men switched over to impress "Whose car consume less". American cars have the stigma of gas guzzlers and sometimes it seems you comit an offenced when driving a bigger car than the standard Volkswagen. The "high efficient and clean" cars of the European car builders are expensive to buy, to drive and to service. Trouble shooting is complicate and expensive, too. You need special fuels, benzine (gas) you get here on each corner is used in the US for stock car racing (100 octane). Fuel is expensive, very expensive - you pay for a gallon (~4 litres) around 6 US$.
American cars rely on good old technologies, simple to build and to keep in shape. Motor power is torn from displacement and not supercharging downsized mini-motors. Due to a lower fuel price you still can afford this and it would be affordable in Europe, too, if changing the fuel system to liquid gas system.
But the hard European lobby doesn't allow this - and so I had to take a Diesel Frontier, instead of the V6 4.0 l or even a Nissan Titan or Dodge RAM (my dream of a Pickup truck)
Some people import American cars on their own, but have problems with the admissions to drive in Europe (changing lights) and the service partners being able to maintain these cars. Furthermore, most of the big american motors/autotransmissions are burned/blasted on the highways here - long distance running at high speed (120-140 mph) they aren't made for - unfortunately.
So most of European car addicts dream about the big block chevys/RAMs/Mustangs/F-series as seen in American films, but just can't afford to drive here. It's really hard even for a Frontier - for you it is a neat car, here it is a monster truck. Parking slots are to small/short, parking garages ceilings too low, streets and corners too narrow and when going to the supermarket you here some comments "Only men with a short penis need such cars"
What I am surprised is that here in the forum are several people driving their Frontier with manual transmission - I always thought that in America you only get automatic transmission, except of some exotic cars from Europe, like Ferrari, Lamborghini and sport models of Porsche ....

I know how it is in europe, my job takes me through there now and then. Tight streets and parking lots. And you're right our cars aren't built for the autobahn or those streets. And gas prices that make you want to cry at the pump everytime you fill up.
I would love to take my Toyota X-Runner over there though. When I get the supercharger on there the top speed governor will be removed. And oh what I would give to take it around the Nuremburg Ring a few times. American's love their 1/4 mile big block motors. Their 180 MPH races around the ring. I love the twist and turns, of pushing you and your vehicle to the limit.
Manuals are slowly dying here in the states, but there are a enough of us to make a demand still for them to be offered my wife being one of them actually. She just refuses to drive an automatic.
Dodge has been trying to slip away from them. Only their low level entry cars (Caliber, Avenger) even offered a manual. The Dodge Ram had a 6spd if you got the Cummins Diesel. In fact, when their new Challenger came out they did not even offer a manual at all. There was enough lag in sales and complaints that they started offering 5spds with the V6, and 6spd with the V8s.
Chevy and Ford have started overpricing their vehicles. There's a F150 on the market now that costs almost $60,000 US. I can buy a fully loaded F-350 1-ton for cheaper than that.

I used to have a 2002 XE, 4x2, 2.4L KA24DE motor, Automatic. Had custom stereo with 2 Pioneer 6.5" speakers, 4 Memphis M-Class 12" Subwoofers. The truck you see in my signature block was it.
I paid $18,500 US.
But I've come to notice that I have car ADD. I see a new vehicle and I just have to have it. Currently I'm driving a 2005 Toyota Tacoma X-runner. 4.0L V6 6spd manual. It says 125 MPH on the speedo, and I've had it up to 115 already. The computer limits it to 119MPH, but when you buy the supercharger you have to reprogram it and it removes the limiter.
