Just got on to this site, thought I'd say hello.  I own a 2000 Frontier 4x4 6 cyl.  I added a "cold air intake" (although after the fact I realized that the original intake was fairly 'cold air' in itself.  I wonder what the real 'cold air' application means when applied to this model, and wonder if I spent money with Nissmo that I didn't need to (it does sound 'cool' but I question it's value).

I also added dual exhaust, in order to hopefully improve mileage in league with the "intake."

Added oversized wheels and tires to my truck, and cosmetically, I have to say it is the best looking Frontier in my town, however, I'm looking for better MPG.

Any thought in this area are well appreciated and I thank you in advance for any input.  I'm still marking factory numbers for mpg:  A paultry 18 mpg on highway isn't something I should be seeingin a 6-cyl....I might as well be driving a V8.

What can I do for 1) power, and 2) mpg?  I realize their is a line where these two actuals become separate.  Opening it up like I did made me think I would get better mpg.  But hasn't.  I could use some ideas here...

Glad to be here, really glad.  Hope to get to know you folks

Alan

Well how much bigger of tires did you get?  While the bigger tires do slow down the gear train, too big of tires will ruin your gas mileage because of weight.

A bedcover or topper will help your mileage (also allows for a higher top speed).  There's not much else you can do for mileage besides keeping your foot off the floor, and don't let the cruise control run while in a hilly area.

18 on the highway eh? eeek i get b/w 17 and 18 in the city usually on my stock 01 CC SE, i guess  i shouldn't whine about that lol...i've never truly ran totally on the highway so i don't nkow what my numbers would be there, but i'm hoping i'd swing the 20-21, i drive super conservatively since i got my truck and gas prices have needed to come with vaseline, but kcid's right too big of tires will be a trade off in mpg, well while your factory intake box was pulling in air from the wheel well, your nismo intake is pulling in more air in general i'd suspect and apparently at speed the air entering the engine bay is closer to ambient temp. a bed cover or camper cover for the rear will improve your mpg, especially on highway driving

there are other things you can do, but i guess there is debate to whether the cost/benefit will be worth it, i have switched to full synth oil (mobil 1) for my frontier and they claim you'll see fuel benefits but i don't think they are extremely measurable, synth tranny fluid is another option and people rave about stuff like royal purple, but as it was discussed here in another post, the tranny fluid might be worth it but the price of it for motor oil seems a little much i know around here i't still around 9/qt for the ATF, and i think i'll just go with mobil 1 as well  when i get to that point.

oh yeah, welcome to the forum

Needed another post to get off a bad post count number.... LOL.

Agree with Frontyfan on the oil.  Synthetic will reduce power lossed because of friction.  But stuff like Royal purple isn't worth it in the engine as it's too expensive to be changing out that often.  I'm going to change out my axles, transfer case, and tranny all for Royal Purple, but find a cheaper alternative for the motor.

Did you say you got bigger wheels?  This would make a difference in economy/speed.

..

loboblanca;

... Welcome to the group.  many areas are getting 10 % corn juice gasoline and it doesn't get the MPG of the the gas with the MBTE.

I got 21+ MPG on my last 2000 mile trip. About 40 miles of that was in 4x4 low on dirt, gravel, rocks, and mud. I don't drive in the city so I can't tell you the MPG..

Here is a link to an article of interest:

Have a good one and    CUL.. Don S..
