I have an 08 Nissan Frontier SE 4.0l automatic.  I am puzzled as to where I would find the transmission dipstick?  How do I check the fluid level? Also, I have on previous vehicles used a synthetic transmission fluid.  Nissan claims that I could only use their fluid.  Any comments or advice?  Thanks

There is no dipstick.  Nasty but common on newer vehicles.  You can check it by unscrewing a plug but the theory is no leaks, no problems.  Just flush it on schedule and use Nissan Matic J fluid, especially while you are under warranty.  There are fluids out there that claim they are Nissan Matic J compatible but for warranty, I'd stay with the OEM fluid.  Off warranty, make up your own mind about htis.  But...you do need to stay with a fluid that has the J rating.

borkosky,

I have an 06 4.0 that also has a dipstick like with Chris6744's 07.  If the 08 is the same, then you'll have to look close to see the little black knob and the 10mm bolt holding it in.  Just look for the tube on the pass. side and follow it up. Then follow the advice Boomer gave you on the fluid.

Does anyone recommend any brand of tranny fluid for the 07 Automatic 4.0?

Matic J is now replaced by Matic S. Some dealers may still
have Matic J in stock .
