Today while driving my 2001 Frontier home from work my speedometer pegged,(while doing 65mph) tach stopped working, fuel gauge read 0 gas, temp stopped working also.  Radio ok, heat ok, kind of like I lost the whole dash any suggestions would be appreciated about where to begin searching out the problem.  Thanks

Well in the problems area there's a link for the FSM, and there's a little troubleshooting guide in there.  Being that you lost your tach and fuel gauge, I would almost say you lost your grounding to the dash unit.  But it's hard to say for sure.

Thanks for the reply, the ground wire makes more sense than other ideas I was considering.  The problem keeps happening sporadically and goes away for awhile,  sometimes it occurs at idle and various speeds.  I will try and search out the ground wire and post back with my results.  Thanks again for the tip.

Where are you in NY? Like kcidmil says, possible ground problem - tighten the steering member(brace that goes across the dash assy) and any ground wire attached to it. Also clean and tighten all grounds in engine compartment. Most likely it is a combination meter assy problem(guages).

I had a similar issue.  My mechanic got into the dash and cleaned the wiring harnesses out and that helped for a month or two, but then the gauges would seize up after half an hour  or so of driving.   It seemed more prone to do this in the hot weather, so I thought it might be heat related.

Try what I did:  turn your dashboard lights down to the dimmest possible setting at which you can still read everything.   It worked for me.  My gauges have not seized up in over a year.

I suspect that when the wire harness gets warm, it is warped just enough that it screws up the grounding.   When you shut the truck off and it sits for 20 minutes, everything works again just fine.  Probably heat related.

If its the lights causing heat build up you might be able to get LED bulbs to fit it. That is if they still use the spade base 164/193 bulbs
