2005 frontier xe the service engine soon light came on.I also had a rattle coming from under the truck. I had Auto Zone read the code. It came back a "PO420." I removed the exhaust tube assembly and discovered 2 pieces of what looked like metal weld, which took care of the rattle, The screen at the bottom of the catalytic converter appeared to be intact. Also the screen exiting the tube assembly appeared to be intact. Put it back together. Disconnected the battery to reset code. Just got back from the store, and the light's back on. Question 1 - Any ideas where that piece of metal came from, and could it cause the light to come on. 2 - Do you think I need a new catalytic converter or 02 sensors or both sensors and cat. thanks for your thoughts.

Cats are warranted for 8yrs/80K miles- go see your dealer !!!!!!

Update: Thanks for your reply 92000 miles
I just received the new cat and exhaust gasket and a small metal o-ring gasket that goes on at the bottom of the cat. Last week when I removed the exhaust and got what looked like a small metal weld out, I don't remember a gasket at the bottom of the cat. I'm thinking that the piece of metal I removed was the gasket, I'm going to replace the o-ring and see what happens. will let you know.

Hey guys,
I'm not sure if I'm having the same issue regarding my 05 LE, but the day after purchasing it from the dealer used (51,000 miles) I filled up at the local gas station. As soon as I pulled out of the parking lot, the empty light kicked on along with the check engine soon light. I also hear a rattle of sorts coming from the engine compartment, almost sounds like a loose shock mount....But I could be wrong! Any help would be great before going into the dealer and having them bend me over....Thanks again!

Well get the codes scanned first, some parts stores will scan your vehicle for free. It really could be anything with what you've given so far.

Sounds like you need a fuel sender unit - there is a TSB for that problem. Have it scanned for codes. the noise could be anything from a sway bar end link - cab mount bolt etc.
