I have a 2003 Frontier that has aproximately 121,000 mi on it. I Have a grinding noise coming from in the distributor. When you rev the engine it sounds like there is something loose rattling around???? I have asked a few mechanics who say if something was loose the engine wouldnt run?????? Anyone else have this? Ne Ideas??

Bearing is bad in the dist most likely, but also a worn/loose timing belt will also sound like a bad dist bearing. Has the timing belt been replaced??? If so, remove the dist cap-rotor and inspection plate, then look for pieces of bearing in the dist . It is replaceable, but a lot easier to replace the whole dist.

I dont know if the timing belt has been replaced or not. I bought the truck used in Feb. I would say not. I tried to take the rotor off, I took the screw out of the back of the rotor but couldnt get it to come off. Where can I find that bearing?? What is involved with replacing it.

The dist has to be removed and completely disassembled to replace the bearing.

Well..seeing as how it is alot less expensive to change the timing belt than it is to change a distributor and it says that it should have been changed at 90K anyhoo..i have decided to try this first to see if it fixes the problem. I have bought all drive belts ( figured since I have to take them off anyways i might as well change them) and timing belt and Haynes Manual...is there any advice before i get elbow deep in this project???
