2005 Frontier Crew Cab 4x4. My transmisson went and my mechanic said there is a know issue with the coolant leaking into the transmission fluid and he thought that was the issue. I took it to the dealership and they said the tranny was shot but he had never heard of that issue. He then goes on to say I need my radiator replaced, too. I'm not a mechanic but can someone help me out and explain why the tranny going bad requires a radiator replacement? Thank in advance for the help.

The cooler in the rad goes bad causing coolant to enter into the ATF, which results in the deterioration of the fiber plates in the trans. And yes, it is a known problem. How many miles on the truck? Is it over 5 yrs since the in-service date? Power train is 5yrs/60K, which is very tricky because the rad fails which is 3yrs/36K, which is what causes the trans to fail!!!!!! Might want to call 1-800-NISSAN.

So is there no validity to the dealer's statement that the transmission going bad ruined the radiator?

To answer your question, there is 126K miles on the truck.

The other way around, the cooler in the rad fails allowing coolant into the ATF, which causes the trans to fail.
