Hello,

I have a 2000 Nissan Frontier, 4x4, V6.  Question: If the catalytic converter was bad, would the check engine light show immediately after running the truck?  Would it take a couple days for the light to show after resetting it?  Should I replace the O2 sensors before the high cost catalytic converter?

Thanks

I believe that is a 2 trip logic, meaning the engine is below 158 degrees, driven for awhile, cooled down below 158 degrees, then driven again- 2 trips. If you have a P0420 or P0430, you need to replace the respective 3 way cat. The question is, what is the cause of the failure?? Misfire, dirty MAFS(using a GENUINE Nissan oil impregnated air filter)???? Or just old age?

Well, the truck is almost 11yrs old.   As for the temperature, the thremostat gauge stays in the middle, all the time, once the truck has warmed up.  I don't know what the "P0..." numbers indicate or where they can be found.  If those numbers could help you determine the cause, please let me know where to find this information.  The air filter is a FRAM brand air filter...

You need to retrieve the codes to determine where to begin, which will require a scan tool. Get rid of the Fram and get a Genuine Nissan OIL IMPREGNATED AIR FILTER from a Nissan parts dept. This can not be stressed enough, the oil in the air filter, filters out the fine dirt that can and will destroy a MAFS.

Listen to Frontierguy, he's right on the money about the
codes and Airfilter. When I first bought my 01 Frontier 2
years ago, it had a check engine light with a code of P0420
- 3 way cat had gone bad.   The used dealer paid for the
part and install of it, very expensive part I might add:
600.00. After this the light reset and has been trouble
free since.

...when I reset the code, by unplugging the battery, the check engine light will stay off at least a day, and sometimes 3 or 4 days, with an average drive distance of 28 miles each of those days.  Is it possible that the O2 sensors are going bad?

Is there any change in gas mileage or performance with your rig?  I have a P0420 code that pops up 3-4 days after erase on a 02 Fronty V6.  No change in gas mileage or performance.  Probably one of the O2 sensors before or after the cat. Also, you can go to Pep Boys or Autozone or places like that and get a free diagnostics test.  At least you'll know the code...  My money is on P0420 and the infamous P0328 tag along with it.

If you have a P0420 - you need a cat!!!!!

Ok, next time I have the light come on, I'll run by the the parts store hand have them read the code for me.  I don't understand why the light stays off for days, even though the CAT is bad?  Anyone know why this happens?
