So I want to change the wheel bearings on the front and rear when I do the brakes this week. I have an 01 Frontier 4x4 with 190K miles. I have a few questions to you all who have done this before. Will I need a puller to pull the hub off with the bearings? Should I be looking to change anything while I am at the automatic hub locks? Do the rear bearings have to be pressed out? I would just like some input before going to the parts store to get everything so I don't make two trips. Is this a tough job? Thanks for the help!

In all honesty, if you have to ask and have never done it before, I would suggest you seek a professional or get a repair manual and the special tools to aid you. There is a tool to remove the "nut" for the front wheel bearings and a certain procedure for the proper preload of the bearings. There is a ton of special tools required for the replacement of the rear axle bearings along with a press. Have the front bearings ever been repacked? That is usually all that is required. If you have no noise or leaks from the rear, why worry???

Thanks, I think you just saved me hours worth of headache!! I figured there were special tools required and I would probably end up putting the bearings on too tight and screwing them up royally. Thanks. I have not noticed any loud noises from the wheels or leaks. I will see what they look like and pack them while I am there. I just know this truck has had 33" tires on it since 120K miles and it has 190K miles now. I just assumed that they would be nearing the end life due to the tires. Thanks. so much for the warning, Eric.
