So recently I've noticed a lot of chatter under the hood, if I get on the freeway... when I get off, it sticks around for a while (sometimes 10-20 minutes).

I talked to a friend, let him listen, and he said it sounds like a lifter is getting stuck, so he told me to put lifter cleaner in the engine. I did so, and the problem went away. For a while at least.

About 3-4 days later, it came back. Now... I've been due for an oil change, but I've been flat broke, so I ran a total of 8000 miles on full synthetic 5w30 oil.. and it was black.

I finally got paid, and so I went down to Kragen auto parts and got a slick deal.. a Wix oil filter and 5 quarts of 10w30, plus some more valve cleaner. I did an oil change in their parking lot (though I was advised not to) and voila, noise is gone again.

My question is this: I'm moving back to Utah from California (Santa Barbara going to Santa Rosa then to Salt Lake City) and I'm worried about the noise coming back. Should I have gone with 5w30 or am I right thinking 10w30 should help out more?

Thanks for the input folks! Always appreciated.

(125,500 miles, 2003 3.3VGE 5spd 4x4)
Oil used: Castrol GTX High Mileage 10w30
Filter: Wix Oil Filter
Cost: ~$22.00 with oil, filter, and oil catch pan

How soon is your fun drive?  I used to live in Oxnard, and just north of SLC.  LOL

If you're not leaving for some time, try giving a test drive on the 10w30 and see if it helps out with the ticking.

Ah well I am supposed to leave Friday.. we'll see.. I want to be in Utah before the 4th.. here's to hoping.
I was just pulled over on the 101nb for 19 miles over the limit.. (84 in a 65) and no lifter noise.
The truck seems to run like normal... so here's to hoping things go well...
I have to run up to Northbay to pick up the last of my belongings from storage.. then off to UT... 18 hours of driving.. FUN!

well getting pulled over wasn't to be part of the test... lol

If you take it easy and keep the foot off the floorboard you should be fine.

Use Kreen made by Kano Laboratories.  Folks on Bob is the Oil Guy swear by it.  Add it about 300 miles before youe change the oil and drive moderately for that amount of miles.  DFrain and refill with just oil.  If it is gum/varnish related, problem should be gone.  Google this product if you can't find it locally.

Thanks for the suggestion Boomer, really appreciate it.

I think for now I will hold off, I just got back to Utah.. it was a 1300 mile trip.. and the truck is rocking out the new oil change.. but hating the dry heat.. I think it likes cool humid air... because it feels like it's dragging it's tail behind it.. oh well.. I'm going to take it to a couple local mechanics I trust and get their opinions.. also, my break light is staying on all the time now.. and the break fluid level is fine.. any suggestions?

Is the sensor on the emergency brake cable hanging up?
