Amazing isn't the word I'd use... 
The battery drain is believable based on something making improper contact internally, or even a corroded connector.
But the crazy thing was pumping out 18.5V (verified by the dealer), and that would seem to point to the PCM voltage regulator.
It's possible the flaky alternator was adversely affecting the entire electrical system. At any rate it's back up and going even though the entire bill was $570. Worth it I suppose because it was not drivable as it was.
No thanks, you can keep your tech position! I was lucky enought to retire from the NC community college system last year, and really, really reduced my stress.
