I have a 2002 frontier 4x4  crew cab.   The check engine light has been going on and off for about a year and within the past few months has stayed on.  I took it to a local mechanic and they said the problem was the knok sensor and would be about $500 to replace.  (The cost of the part is  approx $120, the rest labor)  Then a few weeks I went to Auto Zone to double check, and they said there were 2 codes, I for the knok sensor and 1 for the gas cap.  I put gas in prior to going the the store, so he said it was no concern it was mainly the knok sensor causing the issue.  He did say that whatever the problem is, it is trying to fix itself.  Now I just got off the phone with the dealer to check their cost, and they said that in this truck, the knok sensor will not cause the engine light to come on, it has to be something else.  I explained to him that I already have the codes, but he said that there has to be another code.   His cost to check the code is $90.  Who do I go with?  I know the dealer knows the truck inside and out (at least I would think so) Any one have any similar problems like this??   Another thing, my dad also has the same year truck and the same thing is happening with his.  Any advice??

The cheapest way would be to go to auto zone and have them clear the
codes and see what comes back, if any! The gas cap not on correctly will
throw a evap code but will not set immediately, if it was a evap code and the
gas cap was not on tight it will clear itself after a while, I believe it is 3 drive
cycles without a failure. The evap code is not always the gas cap though, it
could be the vent valve or a small leak in the hose or canister!

Correct on both points. The knock sensor will not turn on the check engine lite and you may have concerns other than the gas cap causing the other code, vent control valve etc. Does the dealer want $90 just to scan it or to scan it and diagnose it for you????

He just said for him to look at it, it would be $90.  I 'll have to call and double check.
