As stated in my last post, my center carrier for the drive
shaft is in need of replacement. It looks like the carrier
itself will run me about $100. I'd really like to do it
myself. I've done a lot more complicated work than this
before. A buddy of mine has a hydraulic press that I could
use, so pressing it on shouldn't be that much of a problem.

I know its important to have everything match marked to
keep things from being installed wrong and becoming out of
balance. Is there anything else I should know??

It's actually difficult to use a press, I prefer to use an
air hammer to remove and just clean and lube the splines
for ease of installation, with careful persuasion from a
hammer. The torque on the nut is greatly exaggerated, be
careful not to strip it by torging to specs, might want to
reduce it a bit.

ok, so I don't need a press to put it on. Just an air
hammer to remove it. Then the torque from the bolt will put
bearing where it needs to be. Am I understanding this
correctly?

The FSM I have recommends 101-123 ft-lbs, would 80 or 90 be
enough?

You should be able to "tap" it into place. Clean and lube
the splines. 80-90 is plenty.

ok, so I was able to get everything off after some
convincing. I put the drive shaft back in place with
everything and clamped it down. I didn't reconnect the
second shaft because I wanted to make sure everything
would spin correctly and not make any noise.

Well guess what, the bearing squeaks and it makes a
horrid vibration at anything above 40mph. Here's a few
things that I think I messed up on:

1. I didn't mark the original position of the yolk
because I thought it would only be able to go on one
way...I was wrong. Is there any way I can fix this
without having a shop re-balance the entire shaft?
2. A new nut came with the bearing...but it didn't fit so
I used the old one again...is this a problem?? Should I
get a new one?

I'm thinking really hard about bringing the whole damn
thing to a shop and just telling them to change the
bearing, then I'll just put it all back in the truck
after its changed.

The old nut should be OK. When you install the yoke for the
u-joint, be sure it is in the same "plane " as the front u-
joint, meaning that the u-joint crosses are the same. I
don't know how else to explain it.
