Hello  and thank you.

I have a 2K Frontier V6 3.3L I have been toying with the idea of replacing the original tranny (200K + miles) 4 speed (w/ OD auto). with a 5 speed automatic one. My questions are:

1- Is such thing possible?

2- Where would I go to get a 5 speed automatic trans?

I am getting ready to go on a very long trip, and I would like to get the best ride that I can.  ( I am going to drive all the way to South America).  Not to mention that I was advised that with a 5 seped, my car would ride at a lower rpm's, and thus lowering fuel consumption.

Any and all help/advidse is more than welcome.

Gus.

The OD is basically the "5" gear, don't know of any other
trans that is available. Maybe it is time to upgrade to a
newer vehicle??????

+1 to  what Frontierguy says.  You don't want to be running on Mexican, Central and South American roadways with a vehicle that may not be dependable.  Nor do you want want that invites theft.  There is a reason why rental car companies don't want you going into Mexico with their car.  And this has been true for a LONG time.  If your trans has that many miles, what about the engine?  And the quality of fuel may not be that great down there either (dirt, water, much lower octane).  I'd think this through carefully before going.

Thank you so much for your reply. I guess that I did not explain myself correctly. It is a 3 speed with an OD, so in essence it is a 4 speed trans.

The reason that I am taking my truck down there is because I can not, nor, will not get a rental while I am driving down south.  In fact several LATAM countries they have 97 octane fuel.  At least I know that is true in Peru.

Motor??? is in great shape, about 50k back I replaced the timing belt, fuel filter, has K&N air filter. New Distributor with new cap. (All Nissan OEM) Front and rear shocks replaced, new rotors and brakes. Does not leak, or burn oil.  For a 200K + is in great shape.

I really enjoy driving my '00 frontie, and thats why I want to drive it to Chile, of course, previous detour in Peru to do the Inca Trail, thru the Peruvian Andes.

So please, if you know where I can pick up a 5 auto  trans. Could you let me know???

Again thank you.

Gus
