Over the weekend I finally changed the engine air filter on my 09 Frontier, which just registered 36000 miles.  I kind of expected the filter to be dirty, but was nevertheless surprised by the extent (especially the oily stuff).

My question is: where did the oil come from, and what does this say about the running condition of my truck?

Nissan OEM filters are an oiled paper filter.  What you are seeing is normal.  This is one reason you should run an OEM filter in your truck.

I agree, I changed mine at 30K looked similar to yours, and used a Nissan air filter replacement.
