I know this has been discussed but I need some input before I do so.  At a cold start the engine will tick for a period of time depending on certain odd factors.  They are:

Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 10w-30 will tick for 10 seconds max.
Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 5w-30 will tick for up to 60-120 seconds.
Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 0w30 will tick for 60- 240 seconds.

I noticed this before and had 10w-30 in it and swapped to 5w-30 and now the ticking is worse off with fresh oil than it was with dirty 10w-30 oil.

Shouldn't a lighter weight hit the lifters quicker thus lubricating them in a faster manner?  Why is the opposite the case.

Another weird note:

If the truck is parked on a hill with the nose facing down the hill it won't tick.  If it is in any other position it will tick.  Weird.

Is it safe to use 15w-30 or 15w-40 in my 2002 Nissan Frontier XE 3.3L?  It seems like the heavier I go the less tick there is.  II live in a four seasons location so temperatures get cold but as stated the 10w-30 still makes it tick the least even if temperatures go below 0 degrees.  Why?

Is there anything that would help that is not snake oil or is every product acetone or a kerosene waste with some Teflon?

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

..

First it would be better to know what model, the engine, and the mileage on the engine.

Parking up or down hill could effect the drainback valve (if it has one) of the filter. Are you using a Nissan filter?

First generation Frontier engines should handle 20W-30 OK. The first number is the real weight of the oil... the W indicates it's got Worms in it... the second number indicates the viscosity at the warmed up engine running temperature (when the worms are warmed upand thicken the oil) . The ticking is when it's cold.

Good Luck.. DonS..

Try adding some Seafoam just prior to your next oil change.
Might want to try a Purolator Pure One oil filter. How many
miles? Are you sure you are not hearing the timing belt
rattle?
