Hello everyone, I was hoping to get some advice on my frontier. Last week i was driving down the road and my engine shut off. I pulled off the side of the road and tried restarting it and the engine wouldnt turn over, so i thought maybe it was the fuel filter was clogged and not getting any gas to the engine. had it towed to a shop nearby and 4 hours later the guy called me and said the timing belt broke and the valves were bent, and i needed a new engine. he said it would be 3500$ for a used engine and 4000$ for a new engine. when i asked him what about replacing the valves he said it wasnt worth it and i should go with the engine option.
so in comes a new garage i called and they asked, how they knew it was the valves, did they take it apart and put a new belt on and do a compression test. i told him i have no idea. he said he would look at it, and if it was the valves, then it would be cheaper and better to just change the valves since the truck doesnt have to many miles on it.
Sooo my question, is has anyone had this kind of issue before? which garage sounds more like they know what their talking about? the truck is a 01 with 142k miles on it. thanks for any advice

when the engine shut off, did it make a horrible racket
right before? Because I can tell you from experience
you'll know if your valves start slapping pistons, unless
you have a big stereo system drowning it out. And when
you tried to restart did it just keep turning and not
start, or just wouldn't do anything.
The 2nd garage has an inkling as to what they are doing.
Honestly I'd go to them and have them start fresh.
I had a 02 w/ 2.4L 4 cyl and had it shut off on me out of
no where one day too. Turns out my distributor fried at
the plug in for the control.

Ishin,
If I had a dollar for every broken timing belt I have
replaced with NO VALVE damage, I could retire! Well maybe
not, but you get my drift. Yes they are an interference
engine, but unless it has a standard trans. (which means
the crank would still turn unless you disengaged the
clutch), you should be OK. I just did an Xterra last week
with a broken belt, new belt on, fired up, no problem. As
kcidmil said, go with the second garage, they at least have
a clue as to what is going on.

kcidmil no it didn't make a sound just died. it sounded like when i turned the key it was trying to crank up
frontierguy yea they said something about they thought the engine was an interference engine, so that makes me feel more comfortable going with garage 2. how intensive is replacing the timing belt? just curious since i need a new head gasket, i think. little bit of oil is leaking on the engine.
thanks alot for your replies

TB,cam seals, fr crank seal,wp, tensioner pulley, around a
5.5 hr job. Head gasket leaking oil, very doubtfull,
coolant yes, but not oil. I would look very carefully for
the source of the oil leak(VC gaskets, rear main seal
and/or retainer gasket, cam seals as mentioned above, oil
pressure switch are a few possibilities.
