Just purchased my first Nissan Frontier. It is 1998 XE 4x4, STD cab short bed, 5 spd. Picked it up for 4500 with only 110k. Perfect shape. The Turck currently has 31x10.50 on stock aluminum rims. Right now I get about 19MPG, I was wondering what kind of gas mileage gains I could make by switching to a P235 tire or maybe even a P215 size tire. If it wont make any signifigant mileage gains Im just gonna leave it alone. 19MPG is nothing to argue with aa 4x4 truck, but if it can be increased that would be great. ALso I am running 10w-30 in the truck now and noticed that the manual calls for 5w-30. Im guessing that I could also get a little better mileage by switching to a 5w oil. Thanks for all the help guys.

You can run Mobil 1 0W-30 in your Frontier as Mobil OKs it for vehicles rquiring 5W-30.  It will boost mileage a bit more, especially in the winter.  For tires, go with a tire with low rolling resistance for the best mileage.  But this may not give the best wear or handling.

i've driven a 2005 frontier with p235 tire, but it cannot handle the wheel spin. but, i do agree, driving with a smaller tire is more comfortable if you're not flooring it.

..

A narrow tire with smooth tread will have less wind drag. An air dam will reduce drag increasing mileage. Thats why most late model cars have them.

Good luck.. Don S..
