Hello! Been a while since I've been on here. Anyway, I'm
looking for a little advice.

I started noticing an oil smell in my truck when driving,
but no noticeable leaks. No spots on the driveway the
underneath of the truck is relatively clean and free of
oil. I lifted up the center console and noticed some oil
sitting in the rubber seal/gasket/boot that screws to the
trans tunnel on the floor that the shifter sticks
through. When I took that off I found the rubber boot on
the transmission that seals where the shifter comes out
is cracked and leaking oil.

I looked on the manual transmission section of the FSM
and its just called a boot. I got a price of $25 from the
dealer. I can't seem to find this part anywhere else.

So, I have 2 questions. Can I just use a generic cv boot
($5) or something to replace it with? If not, do I need
to remove the shift lever from the transmission to
install the new boot? Any advice would be much
appreciated!

Use the Nissan boot. If you can see the boot, all you need
to do is remove the shift knob and the zip tie holding the
boot to the shift tower, then slide it up or slice it to
remove. The new boot, with some silicone lube will slide
over the large part of the shift lever.
