I just purchased my first Nissan a month ago, it is a
2001 Frontier SC, in near mint condition and with 61,000
miles. Nissan was my grandpa's truck and when he passed
away I felt the need to get one myself but I am on a
strict budget, so I had to find an older one. I looked
for a while and I drove through 4 states to get this one
and I really like the style of it. I am not pleased with
the mileage but I am doing what I can to improve it and I
have gone from 12.5 to 15 so that isn't bad. However,
after changing all of the filters and fluids I have
recently felt what seems to be a slippage in my tranny. I
bought some Lucas Transmission fluid because I have
friends that have had success with this product but it
only seems to be getting worse. I don't know what I am
going to do, if I have to rebuild it or get a new one
because I am in a financial bind, plus it's freakin
Christmas time. Any advise on this issue would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks

Sounds like an auto tranny, I am guessing. First thing would be to remove the pan, drain the fluid and inspect the pan and replace the filter if there is one. If you find a lot of debris in the pan, PROBLEMS!! If it looks clean, add new fluid of the recommended type and drive again. If it still slips, you may need a rebuild.
Frontierguy, any other thoughts on this?

I was looking at it and I am amazed at how large the tranny
pan is (especially compared to the oil pan). When I remove
the pan, will I need to put a new gasket on, or are these
the plastic reusable gaskets? (I work for Cummins and many
of our pan gaskets are the plastic reusable type)
Thanks again

The gasket is very rigid and durable, re-usable "most"
times. The filter is a metal screen that is easily cleaned
by spraying with brake cleaner w/o removing it. Be sure the
pan is not dented and restricting flow to the screen. You
might want to check into getting the trans. fluid flushed
after you drop the pan, as Boomer mentioned, and check for
debris, if it is minimal, refill and get it flushed. Lucas
is a good product.

Thanks, I also forgot to mention that the tranny seems fine
when it's cold. It doesn't start slipping until it is nice
and warm.

OK, I'm getting ready to flush the tranny. I don't have a
repair manual so I was hoping that one of you guys could
give me the torque specs on the pan bolts and how much
fluid it takes (I have read 5 but I want to be sure).
Thanks

Don't know the torque specs but start with 3 qts, run the engine according to your owner's manual for checking the AT fluid and keep adding until it is where it should be on the dip stick.

Measure the drained oil so you will know how much to refill with before checking it. Remember the oil with expand as it gets heated.
Good luck.. Don S..

The bolts are 6 ft#. Draining the fluid is not the same as
flushing it. After you drain and refill, I would still
suggest getting it flushed.

OK everyone, the job is done, for now. In case anyone
else wants to do one of these, here is a step by step.
Step 1 Drain the Pan
Step 2 Remove the Pan Bolts

09_212935_Bolts_at_Mount_1.JPG">
09_212953_Jacking_Transfer_Case.JPG">
This step seems easy but the mount at the back of the pan
will keep you from getting these last two out. I used a
1/4 drive 10mm socket and I jacked up the transfer case,
to give me a little more room, for wedging in the socket.
Step 3 Remove Pan and Filter

09_213222_Difference_In_Filter.JPG">
09_213232_Filter_Diference_0.JPG">
Step 4 clean the pan and any left over gasket, the gasket
comes off easy, without scraping, just elbow grease.
09_213354_Clean_Pan_With_Magnet.JPG">
Make sure you have the correct gasket kit because there
are two different ones. The filters are the same but
there are two different pan designs (I was given the
wrong one the first time, so I took my pan with me to get
the correct one).
09_213411_Filter_and_Gasket_Kit.JPG">
Step 5 Put the gasket on the pan with an oil soluble
grease, so that it will stick to the surface (I used
Vaseline and it worked great).
Step 6 Put the Filter Back on and then the Pan.
09_213733_New_Filter_Installed.JPG">
Step 7 Use Blue Lock Tight to put the pan back on and
tighten the bolts to no more than 12 ft-lb of torque
(since I didn't have a 1/4 drive torque ratchet, I just
made sure they were snug but I didn't muscle them on).
Make sure the lines are secured back, on the front of the
pan and fill transmission with fluid.
After I was done I flushed the system by removing the
outlet line, right behind the transmission. There are two
lines and the one closes to the passenger side fender is
the outlet, the other line is the return line. I attached
a hose and ran it into a bucket and then I had someone
start my truck, while I poured in more fluid (you have to
make sure that you keep the transmission full of fluid).
Once you see clear tranny fluid you are done. Re-attach
the hose to the line and that's it.
I was actually surprised at how easy it is to flush the
transmission and I will never take it into a shop for
this. The filter wasn't that bad but it wasn't that good
either. I am glad that I am done........
