Group,

I just replaced the rear shoes on my 03 crew cab SE. The
running brakes feel great, but I have no emergency
brakes. It engages, but not enough to brake the truck to
a stop.

I figured that I had put something together incorrectly,
so I back tracked and checked everything out, but
everything looks.good. I traced the cable back from the
rear to the pedal and it looks good. I tightened my
adjustment to see if that would make a difference, but it
really did not (pedal was tighter, but the braking wasn't
any better).

The shoes I put on were auto part store specials because
I was in a time crunch (I usually stick with Nissan OEM).

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

..

The type of material used on the brake shoe will make quite a difference in the ability of the parking brakes to keep the wheels from rotating when parked. In the early days of hydraulic brakes we had emergency brakes. Today we have parking brakes.

I drove my 1976 Jeep Wagoneer 15 years before I noticed the parking brakes didn’t work… I then fixed then but never used them. In all that time (21 years) the state inspection never checked them. Stopping some GM/Chevy trucks at highway speed just one time with the parking brakes can be very expensive!

Have a good one.. Don S..

Do you suggest I buy some OEM nissan pads and chuck the
parts store specials?

AS Don stated, it is a parking brake. Does it hold the
truck on an incline from rolling?

nope - does not hold the truck. The shoes I bought were
auto parts specials and I did not turn the drums (roughed
them up a bit with some emery cloth). I've checked and
rechecked and all seems to be in order. I have adjusted
the brakes and the emergency brake line. Really strange!!
