So I've been reading all sorts of things on the interwebs all over the last week or so, and on ClubFrontier, there is a gentleman that removed the Y-pipe and did straight pipe into dual in, dual out, and it seems like it works really well. Well, I called a few shops, most were terribly expensive (500-600$?!). I happened to call one shop and spoke to a guy for 10 minutes, he said that it would be a terrible idea, and that it would flow so much the cats wouldn't heat up right, so the truck would run richer so the cats would heat up, and then they would melt down, and my truck would be a brick. Then I went to yet another shop, he said he replaces Y-pipes all the time with no problems, it's on the high performance (400+HP) vehicles that you have to worry about the X and H pipes.. but not with the Frontiers.
So, my question is, since I'm so paranoid and worried about my truck..
Should I eliminate the Y-pipe and hope for the best? (2.25" to dual in, dual out magnaflow) or should I just say screw it and not do it at all.. but still with stock?
I'm looking to get the exhaust done sometime later today (it's 1:00AM here, taking the truck in at 10am)
Thanks guys/gals!

Alright, time for an update, folks.
As nervous as I was to do it, I got it done.
Cats have not been touched, the exhaust tails down new 2.25" pipe from both sides into a dual in, dual out magnaflow mufler, with both exiting in the stock location on the driver's side of the vehicle.
Preliminary reports (20 miles): Nice rumble, nice revs (no rice!) quieter than stock during normal driving, noticeably louder while accelerating. slight power increase low end (1000-2800RPMS) Exhaust emits liquid (normal) No black smoke, no white smoke (everything seems to be burning properly)
I will follow up once I've gone a tank or two (probably early next week) and let you guys know how it's been!

Oh, also, I figured I would link to the original thread that gave me the idea.

Yep, 3.3 VGE33
Not sure on the mpg, but no loss of power high or low end, seems to have evened out (used to have a small lack of power from 1000-2000rpm, then it would kick in, now it's all even power)
I'm keeping an eye on the mpg. I've only gone 70 miles on the new system

Keep us informed. I may be interested in this.
I wonder how the 4.0 would react?
How was your MPG affected?

I always liked dyno/max proflow X tube muffler but 130 bucks seems a little steep. The reason I like the X tube muffler is that if you put duals on my 06 the pipe would real tight between the fuel tank and frame. Been thinking on mine is to use the X tube muffler as a cross over and dump the pipes out one side of the truck

Well so far so good.. I have had a real bad case of the lead foot since getting the exhaust. The tone has changed a bit, and I get a little bit of popping when the RPMs start coming down, but gas mileage seems to have gone from steady 10-12mpg in-town (I romp on it a LOT) to almost 15mpg.
I will try to ease up (it's just so darn hard when ya hear how good it sounds!) and give a more accurate report in another week or so.

I have a 2001 SC. Just got Flowmaster installed. I see there is 4 cats
on the truck. Should I eliminate the latter 2 or bad idea?

The first 2 cats are what matters most.. From my understanding when we (dad and I) tapped holes into the rear cats, they're hollow.. I think more for just evaporating excess fuel? I know it's illegal to remove them here in Cali, elsewhere.. dunno? And I don't think it would make any difference in anything at all.
Quick update on mileage.. I'm still loving the exhaust note, but I averaged 18-18.5mpg going from Santa Rosa to Irvine CA (around 450 miles) doing average of 80-85mph.
I'm sure if I were to drive like a normal person, and not hot-rod (so to speak) the truck all over, it'd be better.. but.. alas, what can I say? I love my truck and how it speaks to me.
(edit) Also, I had stuffed my bed full of stuff (moved down to OC)
