I'm considering installing either a cold air intake or a short ram intake on my '08 NISMO. One worry I have with a CAI is submerging it if I go through some deep puddles and hydro-locking the engine. Any insights? I want the added HP and performance, but I don't want to sacrifice any aspect of its offroad capabilities.

so upon further investigation, it seems the CAI designed for the Frontier is up top, and not in the front/bottom of the engine well like many cars. I am still worried about taking away the added protection the stock airbox provides and exposing the air filter to the elements. Any thoughts?

Not to mention the possible damage to the MAFS by not using
a GENIUNE NISSAN oil impregnated air filter. I am no
expert, but I believe it is very difficult to "bolt on" HP.
With out performing internal engine changes, tuning the
ECU, etc., it is mostly hype. Please correct me if I am
wrong.

AFE and volant both have boxes to help keep the filter
enclosed. AFE also has a "dry" filter which uses less
oil.
A lot of MAF problems come from the fact oil will coat it
and people will use brake cleaner or carb/choke cleaner.
The solvents in these will destroy the protective coating
on the MAF sensor. Also hi-flow filters don't
stop as much debris as the stock type will. Proved this
to my neighbor when it took hours for him to clean his
intake manifold because of his K&N.
Frontierguy is partially correct. An intake can add HP,
but it's potential isn't really unlocked until you can
get a MAF and ECU tune. It's amazing what even a stock
intake can do when the ECU is re-tuned. The biggest
thing I've found is if you want to add real HP... it's
going to cost you.
Plus if you're that worried about getting hydro-locked
and going through that many puddles... you should be
looking at keeping the stock intake and adding a snorkel.
