I'm considering between the Frontier and the Tacoma. I've read a lot about both trucks and I'm guessing I'll get a biased opinion here but I thought I'd give it a try to see what Frontier owners think.

Well I can tell ya a little about both..my father in law owns a tacoma
which I've borrowed for years and is a great truck..I recently bought
an 07 frontier and I am very happy with it! Both are great trucks and
ill just say this..the toyota has a much smoother ride and handling but
the nissan has more power and torque. If you're looking for more of a
rough around the edges workhorse go with the frontier. If you're
looking for a comfy nice all around cruising truck go with the tacoma.
But in my opinion either way you can't go wrong. I have been nissan
loyal for years which is why I chose the frontier. Good luck and let me
know what happened

Well I've owned both.  currently have a Tacoma X-runner.  I love the speed my X-runner, no Frontier can match it.  However I can't drive it around in the winter like I could my 02 Frontier 4x2.  But it's a sport truck not meant for snow/ice.  Either way, with a normal Tacoma or Frontier you can't go wrong.

Could not agree more with the previous 2. I just bought
a brand new 11 sv v6 xtra cab with "premium utility
package".........I am coming from a 82 toyota sr5, but my
previous truck was a 99 dodge dakota r/t. I have also
driven the new toyota tacomas.

The nissan is more of a "truck" than the tacoma, some of
the selling points for me were

1. more solid tail gate and tie downs.
2. interior "fit my dog better"
3. interior is not as nice as the tacoma......but seems
like it will hold up to real work better.
4. Lower cost for more power and similar options.

If I was buying a pickup for tooling around town and did
not need a truck to do what a truck is supposed to do,
I'd choose the toyota (if you don't mind it costing
more).

only thing I really am not crazy about in the
frontier.......

the turning radius of a freight barge, I've got a 16' box
commercial van with a tighter turning radius.

superdot09, as another new owner of an 11 SV Crew Cab V6,
I agree with the turning radius comment you made. I have
cut down on my U turns since I bought this truck.

One more thing I would add to the "not crazy" list....the
hard plastic used on the "knick-knack" trays in the lower
center console and the dashboard tray. They are totally
useless as any item will just roll around and off as you
turn, etc. It would not have been a lot of trouble for
Nissan to :

1. make the "knick knack" trays deeper ( higher sides ).

2. Make some rubberized pads that fit in the trays for
"anti-skid" properties .

3. A hinged cover over the trays, particularly the
dashboard tray. My wife's Hyundai Santa Fe has a hinged
"box" that sits on the center dash, very useful and
simple..............

Are you listening, Nissan ???

Last year (2010) I went to buy a new Frontier. The dealer got me PO'd and I left without the truck. Went the next day and bought a Tacoma. I now own BOTH a Tacoma and a new Frontier. The Taco is lighter, c channel frame, composite bed etc., and has the benefits of what that does, BUT the Frontier has the heavier boxed frame, standard disc in all four corners. Is QUIETER inside, a lot less road noise, and IMO is the better truck. For about the same price, you could buy a reg cab Taco, 4 cyl, stick disc front, drum rear OR a KC Frontier, disc all four corners and BUCKET SEATS. By FAR, IMO Frontiers are more of the GOD honest pick up truck I needed. When I am ready again, Taco will be traded for a Frontier.

I'm new to this forum and I will say, of all forums I've been on, I've never seen this honest of replies to any question. Props to everyone on that!

I had the same question a few months ago and watched video after video of reviews about both trucks. I loved both of them. I personally like the looks of the taco a bit more but I like EVERYTHING else of the Frontier. Both very solid capable trucks but when it came down to it, I bought the Frontier for 4k less and recieved more/better options.

Like you SquirrelMilker, I am a new Frontier owner. I considered the Tacoma, but the selection in Houston TX was paltry to sey the least.  The few Tacomas I looked at tended to be either fully loaded off roaders or a loud color, or both.

I thought the Frontier was just as quiet, the ride was equally good, the Frontier actually looks more like a truck to me than the Tacoma, which I liked. And the selection in Houston was better with Nissan.

I will say that the Tacoma has the better interior, hands down , as far as materials are concerned , but I am getting over that now. The Frontier seats are very nice, and that is a good thing. The back seat is better in the Tacoma, but that is a minor issue.

The $3000 rebate (2011 models) and Nissan's willingness to deal fairly and openly sealed the deal for me.

I like my radiant silver Frontier CC !

If I was going to stay with a truck (which, it turned out, I was - can't really explain it logically), it was between the Frontier and the Tacoma. Brand loyalty: Toyota gave me an amazing amount of money for my frame-corroded '00 Tacoma, plus a rental truck for nearly 4 weeks. Toyota gets top ratings from Consumer Reports. But I simply did not like the restyled (in 2005) Tacoma. Too big, felt like a barge, steering was soft and with the hydraulic clutch assist, felt as bad as driving an automatic. Yuck. Too bad; no doubt an otherwise very fine truck. But it turned out performance is important to me, no surprise. And I've always hated driving vehicles that might or might not go where you point them. Floaty.

Enter the Frontier. Had driven its predecessor 20 years ago and liked it a lot but a Mazda 2600 won. So. Local dealer had exactly one standard shift in an unfortunate color (lava red). Drove it. Immediate appreciation of solid shifting - shorter throw both shift lever and clutch pedal, 6 speeds forward, solid feeling all around even the way the doors shut, steering very tight. Problem: darn thing LIKED ME and wanted to follow me home. Maye it was unhappy sitting unclaimed on the lot with all those dullish silver ones. Anyway she is now much perkier and sitting in my drive.

And I didn't have to return to the Toyota dealer where my much-loved Tacoma is sitting, waiting to go to the crusher (arg - OK, I said it. Acceptance is a large part of recovery). If I could have had the old, better-driving Tacoma back with a new frame, I would have taken it in a heartbeat. To heck with the money and the obvious value of having a new vehicle instead of a 12-year-old one. That was MY truck and I knew its every trick, how to get 25mpg on trips, how underpowered its 2.7L engine was for its weight. But new frames for '96-'00 Tacomas are no longer available.

Current Nissan Frontiers are "Recommended" by Consumer Reports April auto issue. This was critical. The $3000 incentive in effect when I bought plus the dealer's desire to get it off the lot before Jan 1 inventory tax, helped immensely. (Toyota folks won't "deal" much.) And decent used vehicles? Forget it. The dealers want nearly the new price for 2 to 5 year old vehicles. Is that crazy or what? This was the only solution although it was a stretch financially to own it without a loan. Yea!
