hey all, newby here and i'm having a little trouble with my truck... there is a major rattling going on under my truck! originally it only rattled for a split second at 2000 rpms, now its roughly 1000-2000 its rattling... we looked underneath and what appears to be a first of two cat. converters has seemily split where the welds are... really wierd, i don't know if thats right... i haven't brought it to anyone yet, i just like to get as much info as i can before i take it to a shop!

What year is your truck? My truck did the same thing. It turns out the Exhaust brackets were all loose. So every time you hit the gas the exhaust rattles agents the brackets. This over time could also crack the welds because the exhaust is freely moving.

Could also be the engine bracket. But with mine it was just the exhaust. By the way it was one the dealership put on; because when my truck came in the chain that holds it on the trailer ripped a hole in the muffler. Good luck.

Sounds like a catalytic converter issue to me. Either a loose heat shield or the catylist itself could be broken.

You wrote that it looks like welds are split. Are you talking about the welds on the that run along the sides? If so, that would be the loose heat shield.

If that's not it, try hitting the converter with a rubber mallet, or even your fist if you have to, and see if it rattles. Broken catylist.

Good luck.

Awent, have you figured out the problem?  I've got a 2000 Desert Runner with a rattle between 1500 and 2000 RPM and I think it's one of my cats so I'd be interested to hear what you find.
