Hey I was wanting some info on the catalayic converter for a 2002 frontier.  I believe there is 2 on the truck?  I noticed that both mine are badly rusted, one to the point where the halves have almost fallen off.  I don't know much about these components.  Is the outer shell some kind of heat shield?  Is this an expensive part to replace?  Is it possible to get a stainless cat that wouldn't rust apart so quick?

Thanks

You can install a large universal clamp(looks like a large hose clamp) to hold the heat shields on.

Is this universal clamp something I need from the dealer, or are you refering to any kind of large hose clamp?

Available at any auto parts store- auto-zone  - advance auto - pep boys, etc. Just take a measurement of the diameter you need and trim off the excess.  The cats themselves are warranted for 8yrs/80,000 miles, if they fail internally, not the shield, I believe. But check w/ your dealer to be sure.
