My 01/'01 Frontier, 3.3L, manual 4x4 is in need of a new fuel tank. I haven't dropped it yet to see how bad a leak I have, but it is bad. As in half a gallon overnight kind of bad.

I don't know f I can fix it with epoxy (as recommended in a different thread). Given the price tags I've seen for tanks I am tempted to go that route, but seeing how bad it leaks and how rusted everything probably is I wouldn't mind to just slap in a new tank.

I can get a tank for a '99/'00 Frontier for less than half the price of one for a '01 Frontier and for the life of me I can't figure out what the difference between the two is. They are the same volume and look the exact same to me (I know, pictures online are not to be taken as a serious representation of truth).

The OEM part numbers are 172027B400 (for the '99/'00) and 172029Z500 (for my '01). The tanks I am looking at are after market (from the same manufacturer), though. I asked the manufacturer what the difference is, but I think they don't want to be liable for anything stupid I may do, so they ignored my actual question and just stuck to: "You're vehicle requires tank X".

Can anyone tell me if there is a not-too-dodgy way to use the '99/'00 tank or is it just a bad idea overall?

Thank you!

Gerben,

That part # has been replaced with a new part #. Rock Auto
has these as the Alternate Part #'s: Alternate/OEM Part
Number(s): 172025S610, 172025S615, 172025S620, 172029Z500,
172029Z510, 172029Z520

With the New Part #, Rock Auto is supposed to have one for
about 254 $'s unless I missed something.

Yes, RockAuto is where I can get one of the tanks. But I am in Canada and between shipping cost, taxes and import fees I am almost half a grand (Canadian) lighter by the time I get it.

The other tank, a Dorman 576-732, is available for less than half that, but on paper not meant for my year. I can't figure out how they are different, though.
If only my truck was built one batch earlier! 😆

(I just realized the two tanks are not from the same manufacturer, as I said in the op. I just searched a lot with the two Dorman part numbers.)

Gerben,

I didn't realize or either I forgot that you are in Canada.

I would try searching all the alternate part #'s that are
listed. By Google, EBay, and Amazon.

They sure make it tough on you guy's up there. Property
tax's are low in Alabama, so maybe you could relocate
South. Course if thing's continue to get Worse in USA, I
may be trying to relocate North. :) Liveing like I do in
the Country though is a Whole Lot different than in the
City's here.

I think you'll find one at a decent price if you keep
looking hard.

Good Luck
