My 01/'01 Frontier, 3.3L, manual 4x4 is in need of a new fuel tank. I haven't dropped it yet to see how bad a leak I have, but it is bad. As in half a gallon overnight kind of bad.
I don't know f I can fix it with epoxy (as recommended in a different thread). Given the price tags I've seen for tanks I am tempted to go that route, but seeing how bad it leaks and how rusted everything probably is I wouldn't mind to just slap in a new tank.
I can get a tank for a '99/'00 Frontier for less than half the price of one for a '01 Frontier and for the life of me I can't figure out what the difference between the two is. They are the same volume and look the exact same to me (I know, pictures online are not to be taken as a serious representation of truth).
The OEM part numbers are 172027B400 (for the '99/'00) and 172029Z500 (for my '01). The tanks I am looking at are after market (from the same manufacturer), though. I asked the manufacturer what the difference is, but I think they don't want to be liable for anything stupid I may do, so they ignored my actual question and just stuck to: "You're vehicle requires tank X".
Can anyone tell me if there is a not-too-dodgy way to use the '99/'00 tank or is it just a bad idea overall?
Thank you!
