Hey all.  I purchased a 2008 SE Crew Cab 4X4 6 speed on 1-11-10.  On about 2-5-10 the service engine light came on, threw a O2 sensor code. on 2-7-10 the truck lost all power, had it towed to the dealership.  They replaced the cats and O2 sensors on the right hand bank and changed the oil. I finally got the truck back on the evening of 2-18-10,  I drove it 30 miles before the service engine light was back on, I took it back the next morning, they checked it out and ordered the other 2 oxygen sensors and said bring it back on monday.  I used it over the weekend to haul some sheetrock, and did some other running in it.  Over 700 miles of driving this weekend it used 10 quarts of oil.  There are NO signs of leakage, no oil in the radiator, and NO smoke out of the exhaust.  It went back to the shop this morning 2-22-10.  It will be getting a new engine, im not sure how long this deal will take by the time they get parts and get the job done, but its very frustrating.  The truck has 53000 mles. has any one else heard of anything like this?  the little bit of time i drove it before the cataylitic converters plugged it didnt seem to use any oil.  Is it possible that the dealer I bought it from may have put a bunch of STP or something in it to hide the oil consumption problem? could a oil burning problem cause the cats to plug off so soon?  seems like they should have a longer life than 53000 miles.?  I'm also considering selling/ trading off this truck as soon as its fixed this time.  My breif Nissan experience has been poor at best.  May give Toyota a try; or go back to Chevy.

sounds like an intake gasket issue had it happen to an old dodge of min and it happen on a six cylinder chevy of one of my buddies. drove my dodge 75 miles and it would suck up 1.5 quarts of oil. It could of been a weak casting of the plastic intake manifold that is on these frontiers my 06 has been perfect for me. The only american name plate i would trade my truck on is one of those new F150 but that doesnt look like happen I love the frontiers nice total package

Sorry to hear of your misfortunes jjp53. Was this a certified used Nissan? I have the same truck as you, and have an automatic tranny. 10 quarts of oil has to go somewhere. If the O2 sensor keeps going bad and the cats are plugged, must be spewing oil out and the cat is catching it. The spark plugs would be black and wet too.
Hopefully you will get the engine replaced and the truck will be good as new. Besides, the dealer should take the engine apart and find out what is wrong with it, or send it back to Nissan and nissan should tell the dealer what is wrong with it.

Due to the location of the cats, when they start to come apart, the material is drawn into the engine due to negative pressure(overlap), thus scoring the cylinders and causing undue ring wear, which results in excess oil consumption. Very common on the 2.5 Altima, haven't seen it on the 4.0 yet. The big question is, why did the cats fail????????????
If and when they do replace the engine, it is very critical to properly clean the intake/plenum etc. as these will be reused with a reman or new engine.< id="gwProxy" ="">< ="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" ="">

it was not a certified used. As right now I'm waiting on the paper work to be
filed for the warranty. Dealer said Nissan may want to send out a rep to look at
it. What's causing the cats to go out now that's the 64000 dollar question. I
asked that when I picked it up after repair and again today. Couldn't get an
answer on that. Just that it would have to be fixed. The dealer isn't too keen on
doing the engine job. The service manager said they try to send their heavy line
work to another dealer. The next closest dealer is 100 miles away. I'm also
assuming that this is not an isolated problem since the service manager said that
this is the third time he has seen this problem or simular to it. He also told me
not to expect the truck to hold up to being driven down rough/ dirt roads. The
newest info from today makes me feel better about trading it off or selling it.

Just made aware of a concern with the baffles in the valve covers becoming plugged causing oil to be sucked into the engine at alarming rates. The cure is to replace the valve covers, if this is the case, that is why the cats went bad in the first place. If the cats came apart and failed, drawing catalyst material into the engine, that would be a whole different story. IT boils down to: what came first, the chicken or the egg????????????????????????????  Either way, it sounds like an engine that wasn't maintained!!!!! Got to go, Nyquil is taking effect.< id="gwProxy" ="">< ="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" ="">

thanks frontier guy. The service department believes that the cats were pulled
into the engine. Low compression on 1 cylinder. However they can't find a
reason for the initial failure. I will definitely pass this info along. The engine
was a Quaker State engine. I was able to contact the first owner. Still waiting
on Nissan warranty to decide what they want to do

Nissan technical guys claim that it only takes 5 sec of a cylinder misfire to destroy a cat?????? Which I assume, means that in time it will start to come apart, not immediately. Seen it a lot on the 2.5 Altimas. Again, it is sometimes very difficult to find the source of the misfire, unless it does it all the time. Aftermarket air filters and dirty MAFS can be one source of a misfire, O2 sensors, A/F ratio sensors, injectors, spark plugs, poor connections, etc. etc. etc.
Hopefully they will replace the complete engine as opposed to a short block. Just did a short block on a Sentra MR20DE, lots of work!!!

Did they check the valve cover baffles for blockage??? The engine is warranted for 5 yrs/60K miles - the cats 8 yrs/ 80K miles, what is Nissan waiting for?????
