Hi there im new to this forum, and have read every post for the last year, and nothing resembles this. (2002 3.3 non supercharged CC frontier  170,000 miles)

I was towing the boat home, stopped at a light and heard someone hitting metal with a hammer about 4-6 times.. thought nothing get to the next light I hear it again. thought it was another vehicle. Backed the boat in the driveway and Heard it again. I looked all over the compartment trying to isolate the noise and i think its coming from the distributor cap or coming from the passenger side of the engine. sounds like a belt slapping or something when listening with the hood up. I am struggling to explain this, I hope someone can help! any advice is greatly appreciated.

Have you checked your oil level?  Sounds like it could be the beginning of a rod bearing failure.  What does it sound like on start up?  Does it only do this when the engine is under load or does it do it at idle under no load.  More info would be helpful!!

One other thing....does it sound like it occurs every engine revolution or every other revolution?  That can help in the diagnosis.

The oil was a half a quart low. It was making the noise
about every 20 sec at idle but not at any other speed. I was
going to drop it off and have it diagnosed this morning, but
she ran for less than a min died and wouldnt start up after
that! Im guessing irs the timing belt. Not sure yet.

I am not sure if your engine is an interference engine.  Maybe Frontierguy can tell you.  If it is and the timing belt went, you could have valve and piston damage.

Most likely if the TB broke, your valves will be OK. the
only way to tell is to replace the belt(be sure it is timed
correctly) and see if it runs. Seen a lot of them break
with no valve damage.

I want to say thank you!!! to Nissan Guru and to frontierguy!  You guys are great!

I didnt have enough time to fix the timing belt myself this week. so I called around and received 4 quotes!  One as high as 880.00 I told that guy he should try and run a business instead of robbing people!

I had 2 more about 550.00

and a reputable shop here in indiana Called (IMPORT DOCTORS) quote me 325.00!!!  wow was I surprised at that.. and concerned but         &nb sp;         &nb sp;         &nb sp;         &nb sp;         &nb sp;         &nb sp;         &nb sp;         &nb sp;         &nb sp;         &nb sp;         &nb sp; They called me today it is running and they will have it all back together sometime in the morning!!! woo hoo

I have been a member of this site for a short time and I do have some knowledge on several vehicles. I will be visiting here more often hoping I can help someone else out like Nissan Guru an frontierguy have helped me....

Always call around and try and get the best price!!!  ITS WORTH IT!!!

I just wanted to let you guys know. My truck is running great so if your belt breaks in the driveway or at idle you should be ok despite what your mechanic might say!! good luck to you!!
